Endeavour Bay and the hotel gardens from above

About this hotel

General information

The Cotton House is the only hotel on Mustique, a small private island in the Grenadines, and its days revolve around the white-sand curve of Endeavour Bay. Suites and cottages are scattered through some 13 acres of tropical gardens; every one has its own veranda or balcony, many add a plunge pool, and all around are mature trees, flowering beds and abundant wildlife.

The hotel is still the centre of the island's social life. The Veranda restaurant wraps around the central clubhouse, while the Great Room Bar and the Beach Café on the sand are where hotel guests, villa guests and islanders meet for cocktails, backgammon evenings and weekly dinners on the beach. The spa occupies a villa styled like one of the island's private houses, and Mustique's tennis club, riding stables, dive centre and hiking trails are all a few minutes away.

Location

The hotel sits just above the beach of Endeavour Bay, with The Residence on its own hilltop over L'Ansecoy Bay. The island lies about 160 km west of Barbados. The island's own airline, Air Adelphi, runs scheduled Twin Otter flights to Mustique airport from St Lucia (25 minutes), Barbados and Martinique (50 minutes each) and Argyle International Airport on St Vincent (10 minutes), and a representative meets guests in the arrivals hall with fast-track help through immigration and with luggage. Planes cannot land on Mustique after sunset, so international flights need to arrive by 15:30; a private boat from St Vincent or the neighbouring Grenadines can be arranged instead. On the island, guests get about in small open buggies known locally as mules.

Spa

The Cotton House Spa is set in its own villa, designed to feel like stepping into one of the island's private houses. It has nine treatment rooms, each with a private outdoor rain shower and two equipped for Thai massage, along with a bamboo-lined hair studio and a relaxation and beauty space, the Great Room, looking through the gardens to the Caribbean Sea. The Mustique signature treatments are the Himalayan Stone Body Ritual and the Lymphatic Flow Ritual with Movement Cupping, and Bamford body and skincare products are sold in the spa. Treatments can also be taken in the room, and bespoke programmes are put together for groups.

Sports & leisure

Sport at the hotel means the island's own facilities, all open to its guests:

  • Mustique Tennis Club — five omni courts and one hard court, plus pickleball and two padel courts, all floodlit and free for island guests, with lessons, clinics and daily social play
  • Watersports Centre on Endeavour Bay — scuba diving with PADI instructors (beginners' courses included), snorkelling, stand-up paddleboarding with guided sunset paddles, windsurfing and Hobie Cat sailing lessons; experienced sailors can charter schooners and catamarans
  • Equestrian Centre — lessons for every level, rides along the island trails and swimming in the sea on horseback
  • The island gym, with Hammer Strength and Life Fitness equipment, a yoga and Pilates studio and two shaded outdoor pavilions; Pilates, HIIT and several styles of yoga, plus personal training
  • Sunrise yoga on the beach or privately in the room
  • Hiking trails across the island, from the bird sanctuary walk to a four-hour circuit of the whole of Mustique
  • Fishing for dorado, tuna, sailfish and marlin, and outings on Lady Anne, a 38-foot powerboat, to the neighbouring islands and the Tobago Cays; golf can be played on nearby Canouan

The island week has its rituals: a backgammon night in the Great Room, a weekly cocktail party there and the Cook on the Sand dinner on Endeavour Bay beach. Mustique also has four boutiques, among them The Boutique beside the hotel beach.

For children

Nannies and childminders are available on the island, and the Equestrian Centre's pony camps, the tennis club's Junior, Tots & Teens camps, and children's diving and sailing lessons keep older children busy. The island team also organises drive-in movie nights, treasure hunts, kite-flying competitions and night snorkelling for young guests.

Restaurants & bars

Cooking at the hotel is built on Vincentian produce and the local catch, and evenings tend to drift from the restaurant to the bar:

  • Veranda — the evening restaurant wrapped around the central clubhouse: West Indian dishes, classic and contemporary, smoked and grilled over flame with house rubs and spiced marinades, served as sharing plates or full mains
  • Beach Café — restaurant and bar at one end of Endeavour Bay: long lunches of grilled fish and seafood, salads, sushi, tacos and vegan dishes; wood-fired pizza on Friday evenings and the weekly Cook on the Sand, with pork slow-cooked in banana leaves buried in the sand over hot coals
  • Great Room Bar — the hotel's meeting place, with a long cocktail list, a deep collection of Caribbean rums and cigars; light dishes and a children's menu are served through the day and into the evening
  • Picnics — thatched gazebos on several of the island's beaches, where the hotel lays on lunch or dinner

Elsewhere on the island, about five minutes' drive away on Britannia Bay, Basil's Bar serves beach-bar lunches and dinners over the water, with live music and dancing at the Wednesday Jump Up, taco and tequila Thursdays and Sunday Sunset Sessions. Rates include breakfast, and full board is available.

Swimming

The hotel opens onto the white sand of Endeavour Bay, with calm, warm water and reefs for snorkelling right in the bay; a coral restoration project lies just off the watersports centre. Washed by both the Atlantic and the Caribbean, Mustique has nine very different beaches, from the sweeping crescent of Macaroni Beach on the east coast, its powder-white sand backed by palms, to the wild, windswept bays of the north. Many of the suites have their own plunge pool, and The Residence has a full-size pool.
