About this hotel
General information
Canouan Estate Resort & Villas is a collection of villas, residences and suites spread across roughly 485 hectares of Canouan, a small crescent-shaped island at the heart of the Grenadines. Guests stay in separate houses among tropical gardens and hills above coves of white quartz sand. The villas follow traditional Caribbean lines in stone, pale render and hardwood under shingle roofs, while the larger residences each have a look of their own.
Every villa comes with a butler, daily housekeeping and a golf cart for exploring the estate's beaches and coves. Much of the north of the estate is left undeveloped, with protected areas for red-footed tortoises, and hawksbill and leatherback turtles nest on its north-eastern beaches each year. An old stone chapel set in the gardens is used for weddings.
Location
The estate covers the north of Canouan around Carenage Bay and takes in Shell Beach and L'Ance Guyac; a barrier reef of about 1.6 km runs along the island's Atlantic shore. Guests fly to Barbados, where a resort representative meets them and helps with the connection, then continue on scheduled Grenadines Air Alliance flights from Barbados or St Vincent, or by private charter, to Canouan airport. The estate also has its own six-seat Cessna Citation jet, flown as a shared or private charter from Barbados, St Vincent, St Lucia, Grenada and Martinique. The transfer from Canouan airport takes about 10 minutes and is complimentary.
Spa
The resort has no spa of its own: treatments, at extra cost, are arranged at the spa of a neighbouring partner resort on the estate, which has hillside and over-water treatment rooms.
Sports & leisure
Paddleboards, Hobie Cats, kayaks, windsurfing and snorkelling gear are complimentary; snorkelling starts right at the resort, and the uninhabited Tobago Cays are a short boat ride away. Diving is arranged with neighbouring dive operators on request, and the Van Dutch 55 motor yacht can be chartered for days among the islands. The tennis centre has three floodlit artificial-grass courts, equipment hire and a pro shop, with a seasonal pro for private lessons. The fitness centre offers Cybex machines, free weights and space for floor work and boxing. The golf course runs over hills above the ocean, its ridge looking out to the neighbouring Grenadines, with a pro shop and private lessons. A guided hike climbs to the island's highest point, with views to Mustique, Mayreau, Palm Island, Union Island, Petit St. Vincent and, on a clear day, Grenada.
For children
The Pirates of Canouan Kids & Teens Club is complimentary and open daily for children from 3, with a programme that changes every day, from cooking to arts and crafts. It has two pools, one for toddlers and one for older children, with loungers and umbrellas, plus a separate teen room. Private childminding can be arranged.
Restaurants & bars
Seasonal menus pair local produce with international cooking, and the evening dress code is smart casual. Guests may also dine at the restaurants of a neighbouring resort on the estate.
- Shell Beach Bar & Grill — relaxed Caribbean-leaning lunches in a sheltered cove on Shell Beach: catch of the day, burgers, salads and wraps
- Bellini’s Bar — a daytime bar at the centre of the resort, with al fresco dining over the estate and a welcome for families
- L'Ance Guyac Beach Club — a secluded beachside restaurant on L'Ance Guyac serving seasonal Mediterranean cooking at lunch and dinner; children under 6 are not admitted
Swimming
Guests have the use of four white-sand beaches on the Caribbean and Atlantic sides of the island, along with quiet coves. Shell Beach is a sheltered bay where sea turtles are often seen grazing on the seagrass. Every villa has its own pool, loungers, umbrellas and beach towels, and Beach House, Big Blue Ocean and Little Blue Ocean have private paths down to the sea.
Rooms
Eight villas and residences of three to six bedrooms, plus one- and two-bedroom Carenage Suites, are scattered across the estate among gardens, most of them looking out to the Caribbean Sea. Villas come with a butler, a fully equipped kitchen and a golf cart; the suites have a daily personal host.
Air conditioning, ceiling fans, TV, Wi-Fi, safe, hairdryer, slippers, espresso machine and kettle, and a non-alcoholic minibar replenished daily; the villas add a kitchen and laundry.
