Nyungwe Tea Forest Resort

About this hotel

General information

Nyungwe Tea Forest Resort sits where the edge of Nyungwe National Park meets the neat green rows of the Gisakura Tea Estate: ancient rainforest on one side, a working tea plantation on the other. Its villas and treehouses are raised into the canopy, so the forest is at eye level and mornings come with birdsong and monkeys moving through the branches.

Stays are all-inclusive: breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks, house wine, beer and soft drinks, and drinks and snacks in the room. Each guest has two experiences a day, chosen by them or shaped around the weather and what the forest has to offer. Access to the fitness centre is included, as are trekking gear — ponchos, gaiters, backpacks — and shoe cleaning and laundry after outings. The minimum age is 15.

Location

The resort lies on the edge of Nyungwe National Park, within the Gisakura Tea Estate in Rwanda, about 230 km from Kigali International Airport. It can be reached by road, by domestic flight or by helicopter straight to the resort’s own helipad, and the resort arranges the journey.

Spa

The spa has two treatment rooms set within the tea estate, with a deck and lounge that open directly onto the forest. Treatments draw on African practice and are tailored to each guest rather than picked from a fixed menu, using Africology products made in South Africa from indigenous plants. Highlights include Forest Awakening, an open-air treatment with essential-oil inhalation, an African mud scrub and a full-body massage; a choice of massages including the Fire Ritual; a Rwandan coffee and mint wrap; the African Marula Experience, a Hypoxis wrap with African potato and marula oil; and manicures and pedicures with natural botanical products. The spa welcomes guests aged 16 and over.

Sports & leisure

Two experiences a day per guest are included, led by guides who know the land well:

  • chimpanzee treks on foot with expert guides in the protected forest around the resort, home to other primate species too;
  • canopy walks and twilight hikes through the forest;
  • guided walks through the Gisakura tea fields and a Rwandan tea ceremony;
  • guided birdwatching for the forest’s colourful endemic species;
  • archery on high ground above the tea fields, with the forest and hills spread out below;
  • sunrise yoga on the private Yoga Deck above the rainforest, mindfulness meditation, personal training and a fitness centre.
Restaurants & bars

The kitchen works with produce from the surrounding highlands and its own Chef’s Garden, and with Rwanda’s culinary traditions:

  • Dining Room — the farm-to-table restaurant among the tea fields, with floor-to-ceiling glass and a terrace; breakfast, high tea and dinner, with Rwandan recipes reworked, such as indagara broth with dried fish, Nyungwe flatbread and cassava with pulled lamb; the fire is lit after dark;
  • Tea Lounge — a spacious lounge for the Rwandan tea ceremony, with the estate’s infusions served alongside pastries from the kitchen;
  • Tea Bar — cocktails built on tea, coffee and Rwandan botanicals, served on the open-air deck or by the fire;
  • Tea Deck — dinner among the tea fields, with a menu shaped around the estate’s harvest;
  • Yoga Deck — a table for two high above the valley, for long lunches or breakfast at first light;
  • private meals wherever guests prefer — in Nyungwe National Park, on a quiet stretch of the estate or on a hilltop.
