About this hotel
General information
PALM Hotel & Spa sits on a clifftop above Grande Anse beach in Petite-Île, on the stretch of Réunion's south coast known as the Wild South. Its 72 rooms, suites, lodges and villas are scattered across four hectares of tropical garden, in buildings that take their cue from local architecture: Creole villas set in greenery, timber and lava stone, terraces turned towards the Indian Ocean.
The pace is unhurried: two pools above the bay, the KAH Beach relaxation area, a spa brand of the hotel's own with its own cosmetics line, and cooking built on island produce. In the austral winter, whales can be watched passing through the bay from the terrace, and the hotel's own helipad allows sightseeing flights over the island to start on site. PALM holds the EU Ecolabel.
Location
The hotel stands in Grande Anse, in the commune of Petite-Île, above the beach of the same name and close to Saint-Pierre, the busy hub of the south. Saint-Pierre airport is about 25 minutes away by car and Réunion's international airport about an hour and a half (roughly 100 km) along the coast road. Shuttles and private transfers can be arranged through reception.
Spa
AKEA Spa & Beauty covers 435 m², with a steam room, a whirlpool, two couples' treatment rooms with baths, four single rooms, a beauty room and a tropical garden. It works with its own AKEA products, made from ingredients of natural origin largely sourced around the Indian Ocean, and a signature scent, "Secret de Spa", created with a perfumer from Réunion. Treatments include the Akéa massage, Aqua Sens (a watsu and shiatsu blend in the warm water of the pool), a bamboo massage, the Dream of Siam ritual with steamed herbal pouches, a treatment with semi-precious stones from Madagascar and organic facials; guests in the Lodges and Pool Lodges can book SENS by AKEA on their own terrace. The spa is for adults.
Sports & leisure
The fitness room is fitted with Technogym equipment, with personal training available. For downtime there is table tennis, a pool table, a mini-golf practice area and board games, and sightseeing flights over the island leave from the hotel's own helipad. The concierge team suggests guides and arranges outings:
- climbing the Piton de la Fournaise volcano and driving across the lunar landscape of the Plaine des Sables
- lava-tube walks with specialist guides
- canyoning through the island's rivers and waterfalls
- snorkelling with dolphins and whale watching in season
- catamaran cruises and sunset horse rides
- full-day island tours by four-wheel drive with a local guide
- rum tasting at an old distillery, a coffee estate growing Bourbon Pointu, a vanilla farm, a garden of perfume plants and spices, and the botanical garden in the hills above Saint-Leu
For children
Children have a games room, and the concierge can arrange a babysitter on request at least 24 hours ahead (at extra cost).
Restaurants & bars
The kitchen follows the seasons and works with local produce, pairing Réunion traditions with influences from further afield; there is no full-board plan.
- Le Makassar — the main restaurant, serving dinner à la carte or as a set menu drawn from the island's culinary heritage; the home-made breakfast is served here too
- KAH Beach & Restaurant — lunch and dinner on the hill above Grande Anse beach, sharing plates built on Indian Ocean seafood and island farm produce, with craft cocktails
- Kokoa Bar — a panoramic terrace bar by the pool, open from mid-morning to late evening, with tapas, light dishes and locally inflected cocktails at sunset
- Makassar Lounge — a reading room with a wooden bar and leather armchairs beside the restaurant's wine cellar, hosting regular tastings and wine-pairing dinners
Swimming
Two pools, one of them heated, face Grande Anse Bay. Above the sea, the KAH Beach area has a heated whirlpool, a steam room, canopy beds and sunloungers. Five minutes' drive below lies Grande Anse beach, a broad stretch of white sand lined with coconut palms, with a natural rock pool.
