About this hotel
General information
Blue Margouillat is an intimate hotel on the hillside above Saint-Leu, on Réunion's west coast. It occupies a spacious Creole house with a long verandah facing the Indian Ocean, a tropical garden of frangipani, hibiscus and allamanda, and a main lounge furnished in exotic woods. There are just 14 rooms and suites, each turned towards the ocean, and the hotel is the island's only member of Relais & Châteaux.
The table is the heart of the house: the gastronomic restaurant L'éveil des sens marries a French grounding with island produce and spices, and the cellar lists more than a thousand references. The mood is quiet and private, with a library of books on Réunion, a small shop and a gallery of contemporary work by Réunionese artists. The hotel holds the EU Ecolabel, with solar-heated water, food waste composted for its own garden and a preference for local, organic suppliers.
Location
Saint-Leu, on Réunion's west coast: the hotel sits slightly above the shore, facing the bay of Saint-Leu, with a panorama that runs along the coast as far as the L'Ermitage lagoon. A private car transfer with an airport welcome is arranged on request; a Kar'Ouest bus passes close by, and the Car Jaune line T stop is a 12–15-minute walk.
Spa
There is no spa centre as such: a certified therapist works in the room, on a massage table. The menu runs from the signature The Blue Margouillat (90 minutes of back, scalp, face and arm massage with foot reflexology) to the restorative oil massage Back from the Cirques, the reflexology session Prelude to the Nap, the deep forearm work of Totally Zen and the gentle Babymoon for mothers-to-be. Both suite types have their own swimming spa at 35 °C in a private tropical garden, and the organic body products and massage oils are sold at the hotel.
Sports & leisure
Days here are shaped around the island rather than the hotel:
- from July to September, during the austral winter, humpback whales and their calves can be seen from the rooms and the verandah
- diving equipment is lent to guests for their stay
- the concierge books excursions and restaurants and arranges electric bikes or electric cars through partners in Saint-Leu
- a library of books on Réunion, alongside novels left by earlier travellers
- a gallery of contemporary art by Réunionese artists and a shop; the hotel is the island's official distributor of Zalto glassware

Restaurants & bars
Food is Blue Margouillat's main subject, from breakfast to candlelit dinner:
- L'éveil des sens — the gastronomic restaurant: carefully sourced produce seasoned with island spices such as turmeric, coriander, cinnamon and ginger, served by candlelight around the pool or on the verandah above the bay of Saint-Leu, with jazz in the background; for stays of three nights or more, a half-board option of a three-course market menu chosen by the chef (drinks excluded)
- Cave du Blue — a wine cellar of more than 1,050 references (wines, champagnes and spirits) and some 11,000 bottles, with a cheese cellar and a tasting room; around thirty fine wines are poured by the glass through a Coravin system
- Pool bar — lunch and afternoon tea from 13:00 to 17:00 with à la carte snacks, and sunset cocktails with pastries and small bites from the kitchen
- Breakfast — served at the table, with a buffet of fruit, dairy, pastries, fresh juices and island jams such as lychee, papaya, cherry guava and tamarind
Swimming
The pool lies in a Creole garden of tropical flowers and looks out to the ocean; it is heated to 29 °C all year. The Creole Suites and Romantic Suites add a private swimming spa at 35 °C, with areas for lounging and for swimming against the current.
Rooms
Fourteen rooms and suites, all facing the ocean: ten adults-only Sea View Bedrooms in the main Creole house, two Creole Suites in the garden on either side of the pool, and two adults-only Romantic Suites. All rooms are non-smoking, and a courtesy room with luggage storage covers early arrivals and late departures.
Each room has soundproofing, air conditioning, a bathroom with a walk-in shower and organic toiletries from local craftspeople, a hairdryer, a separate WC, a telephone, free Wi-Fi, a TV, a minibar, a safe and a Nespresso machine.
Sea View Bedroom
A room in the main Creole house, terrace included in the area: a queen-size bed, a bathtub facing the sea and a walk-in shower, and a terrace with a wide chaise longue and a marble table over the bay of Saint-Leu and the Indian Ocean. Adults only, for two guests.
Creole Suite with Swimming Spa (Private Pool)
A garden suite beside the pool, terrace included in the area: a bedroom with a queen-size bed, a living room and a sea-view verandah, a rain shower, and an outdoor shower and private swimming spa in its own tropical garden. For two adults and two children under 12.
Romantic Suite — Villa with Spa
A suite with a living room in the spirit of the great Creole houses, a super king-size bed, an island bath, a walk-in shower and a winter garden with an outdoor shower. The large terrace holds a lounge and a 10 m² swimming spa at 35 °C facing the ocean; adults only, for two guests.
