About this hotel
General information
The Yeatman is a wine hotel on the hillside of Vila Nova de Gaia, among the old lodges where port has been aged for more than three centuries. From the south bank of the Douro it looks across the river to Porto’s UNESCO-listed historic centre, and every room shares that view of the old city. The name honours the Yeatman family, port shippers who entered the trade in 1838. Built of local granite, the hotel was designed to settle quietly into the slope of the lodge quarter, and its interiors pair Portuguese hospitality with understated British comfort.
Seven acres of grounds hold gardens planted with some twenty kinds of tree, medicinal herbs and an olive tree more than 1,350 years old. At the heart of the hotel are cellars holding one of the most complete collections of Portuguese wine, and partner wineries host tastings and dinners here every week. The Yeatman is a member of Relais & Châteaux, with its own gastronomic restaurant and a Wine Spa built around grape-based treatments.
Location
The hotel stands in Vila Nova de Gaia, on the hill above the riverside port lodges and opposite Porto’s historic centre. General Torres metro station is a few minutes’ walk away, and the yellow line runs from there to São Bento and Trindade in the old town; Porto Airport is reachable by metro with a change at Trindade. Devesas railway station is a five-minute drive. There is underground parking for 150 cars, and on request, guests in the signature suites are driven around the city in the hotel’s own English cab.
Spa
The Yeatman Wine Spa looks out over Porto and the Douro and builds its menu around vinotherapy. Its ten treatment rooms offer massages, facials and body treatments, barrel bath immersions, Marma therapy and CBD treatments, using Natura Bissé for facials, Vinoble Cosmetics for grape-extract massages and treatments, and Ilá, alongside the hotel’s own signature rituals and programmes. The well-being area has a Roman bath, hammam, sauna, heated stone beds, an ice fountain and an experience shower, with direct access to the indoor panoramic pool. Manicures, pedicures and a skincare boutique complete it. Treatments run daily from 10:00 to 20:00.
Sports & leisure
Resident guests use the gym and both pools freely; a personal trainer can be booked in advance, and an exercise bike, dumbbells, a Technogym bench and other kit can be brought to any room, while the suites can host private yoga or Pilates sessions on request. Wine shapes most of the programme:
- a daily Porto & Douro tasting from Tuesday to Saturday at 17:00 — three wines, with an introduction to the region’s terroir, grapes and winemaking
- a private 90-minute masterclass of six or twelve wines from the cellar, chosen for each guest
- a Wine Flight at Dick’s Bar — three whites, reds or ports of the guest’s choice, served with cheeses and smoked sausages
- weekly Thursday wine dinners hosted by winemakers and guests from Portugal and abroad
- visits to vineyards and estates in the Douro Valley, Minho, Dão and Bairrada
- the Wine Shop on the ninth floor, with 1,600 labels from the hotel’s cellar, partner-estate olive oil, Portuguese tinned fish, chocolate, ceramics and textiles
For children
The Kids Club welcomes children aged 3 to 16, and babysitting can be arranged with advance notice. Families have interconnecting rooms, extra beds and cots, and the Barbeito and Falua suites sleep two adults and two children. The walled gardens give children a safe place to explore: hunting for the ancient olive tree, learning how cork is made, signing the world’s biggest cork, peering through the underwater portholes of the decanter-shaped pool and riding the hot-air-balloon lift. There is no children’s pool; the gastronomic restaurant admits children from 12, and the hotel suggests The Orangerie and Dick’s Bar & Bistro for family meals.
Restaurants & bars
Wines from the hotel’s cellar are poured in every one of its venues.
- The Yeatman Gastronomic Restaurant — contemporary Portuguese tasting menus paired with wines that trace the country’s regions, served in a formal dining room facing Porto; dinner only, Tuesday to Saturday, children from 12
- The Orangerie — Portuguese produce in generous dishes for sharing, with a terrace over the city; lunch and dinner daily, and breakfast here and in the Winter Garden
- Dick’s Bar & Bistro — a private-club-style bar named after Dick Yeatman, a well-loved figure of the port trade: wood-aged and vintage ports by the glass or bottle, wines by the glass, light dishes, afternoon tea, a piano bar and live music on Friday and Saturday nights
- Pool Bar — drinks and light meals beside the outdoor pool
For private dinners there is a dining room opening onto the fourth-floor terrace and the Vaulted room, styled as a wine cellar.
Swimming
The hotel has two panoramic infinity pools. The outdoor pool, shaped like a decanter, keeps its view of Porto and the Douro even underwater through portholes; it is lined with loungers and parasols, has its own Pool Bar and is open in season. The indoor freshwater pool in the spa is kept at around 30 °C and opens daily from 8:00 to 20:00. There is no children’s pool.
Pets
Dogs up to 20 kg or cats are welcome, one per room, in Superior Rooms and The Bacchus Suite Panoramic only, and should be booked in advance. Pets receive bowls and a welcome treat, and may join guests on a lead in some public areas, though not in the spa, Dick’s Bar, the Pool Bar, The Orangerie, the gastronomic restaurant, the event rooms or the Kids Club. Pets may not be left alone in the room; the concierge can arrange a pet sitter.
