Six Senses Douro Valley

About this hotel

General information

Six Senses Douro Valley occupies Quinta de Vale Abraão, a 19th-century manor house high on a hillside above terraced vineyards, with the Douro running at its foot. The restored quinta pairs period features with contemporary interiors built from natural materials and Portuguese craft. Its 71 rooms, suites and villas are spread across the main house, a converted wine lodge next door and private pool villas tucked into the gardens.

The estate takes in kitchen gardens, vines, woodland and old parkland that the hotel is nursing back to health through its own forest restoration project. Wine sets the rhythm of a stay: the Wine Library hosts a sommelier-led tasting every day, drawing on wines and ports from the valley’s leading producers. Each guest has a personal Guest Experience Maker, and all around lies the Douro Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the oldest demarcated wine region in the world.

Location

The hotel sits at Samodães, near Lamego, in the heart of the Douro Valley. Porto Airport is a 75-minute scenic drive away and Lisbon about four hours by road. The hotel arranges airport meet-and-greet and private transfers from Porto and Lisbon airports by car, electric Mercedes EQS or minivan, and drivers of electric and hybrid cars will find ten free charging points on site.

Spa

Six Senses Spa Douro Valley shares 2,200 m² with the fitness centre, and its design draws on water, stone and wood. There are ten treatment rooms, a nail bar, a consultation room and an Alchemy Bar where guests blend their own scrubs and balms from plants; a Vitality Suite with a sauna, infrared sauna, herbal sauna, steam room and laconium; cryotherapy; a vitality pool; and a heated indoor pool with massage jets, colour therapy and underwater sound therapy. Signature treatments include Warming Schist Vinotherapy — a grapeseed-and-port scrub, a massage with warm schist stones and a short facial — The Dreamcatcher with CBD products by Kloris, and the Triple Life Facial by Biologique Recherche. Wellness screenings, skin analysis, biohacking and programmes for sleep, yoga, detox and stress relief go further. The spa opens daily, and its facilities are for guests aged 14 and over.

Sports & leisure

The fitness centre and studio offer on-demand classes and personal trainers, while the Guest Experience Makers run a weekly programme on the estate and on the river:

  • wine — daily tastings in the Wine Library, winemaker dinners, a walk up the hill to the Port Knox cellar on a neighbouring quinta to taste ports from the cask, and a three-hour vintage-boat trip with a guided tasting; at harvest time guests can help pick and tread the grapes
  • river and outdoors — stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, water-skiing and wakeboarding, seasonal vintage-boat cruises, mountain biking, tree climbing, canyoning, helicopter flights over the valley and forest bathing
  • culture and food — azulejo tile painting, Portuguese cooking classes, a Chef’s Table in the restaurant’s Open Kitchen, organic garden tours, a workshop on pickling, yogurt and sprouting, prehistoric rock-art sites and heritage train journeys
For children

The Grow with Six Senses programme gives younger guests yoga, cooking workshops, crafts and spa treatments of their own. Families can go canoeing or take a boat on the river, try aerial yoga, cycle, birdwatch, picnic and climb trees in the woods. Baby cots and day beds can be added to parents’ rooms and there is a children’s menu; the Two Bedroom Pool Villa and the Valley rooms, which can be combined, suit families well.

Restaurants & bars

Menus follow the seasons and draw on two organic gardens, one of them on the estate itself.

  • Vale de Abraão — the main restaurant: a dining room with a walk-in fireplace, 18th-century azulejos, cork ceilings and granite floors, plus a fountain terrace over the vines; seasonal tasting menus, and an à la carte Open Kitchen cooking over wood-fired ovens and a Josper grill
  • Cozinha do Douro — northern Portuguese cooking in the Wine Library and on its terrace: Atlantic fish, regional olive oils and sharing plates matched with Douro wines and port; dinner only
  • Wine Library — wines by the glass from self-service dispensers, tapas, private tastings with the sommelier and, on summer evenings, vintage films on the terrace
  • Quinta Bar and Lounge — drinks, tapas, afternoon tea and regional cheeses, with a pool table and board games
  • Summer Garden — an open-air summer restaurant and barbecue serving meat, Atlantic fish and vegetables from the organic garden

The chefs also prepare private picnics by the river, among the vines or in the woods, and destination dinners in hidden corners of the grounds, such as a Georgian-era grotto.

Swimming

The estate has a large outdoor swimming pool, while the spa adds a heated indoor pool with massage jets, colour therapy and underwater sound therapy, and a vitality pool. The Valley rooms and suites share their own heated pool and outdoor hot tub, and each pool villa has a private heated pool with a counter-current system. The spa pool is open to guests aged 12 and over; younger children may swim there from 8:30 to 14:00 with an adult.

Pets

Small pets weighing up to 7 kg are welcome, provided they are fully trained and kept on a lead.

Rooms

The 71 rooms, suites and villas combine contemporary design with natural materials and Portuguese touches, and large windows frame the vineyards or the river. The nine Valley rooms and suites fill a converted wine lodge next door with shared gardens, gazebos, a pool and a hot tub, while the pool villas are hidden away in the gardens.
