Bairro Alto Hotel

About this hotel

General information

Bairro Alto Hotel fills a group of 18th-century buildings on Praça Luís de Camões, at the point where polished Chiado gives way to bohemian Bairro Alto. The block is listed as of municipal interest, and the building once housed one of the great hotels of the Portuguese capital. The hotel is regarded as the pioneer of the five-star boutique format in Portugal and is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World.

The restoration and extension are the work of Pritzker laureate Eduardo Souto de Moura, with interiors by Atelier Bastir and TheStudio: handcrafted Portuguese materials, hand-made tiles and marble set against quiet contemporary furniture. Its best-known asset is height — the BAHR terrace on the fifth floor and a guests-only rooftop on the sixth look over Lisbon’s roofs to the Tagus. There is also an in-house patisserie, a mezzanine bar, a wellness centre and four meeting rooms.

Location

The hotel sits in Lisbon’s historic centre on Praça Luís de Camões, between Chiado and Bairro Alto, with steep lanes of bars and galleries, the route of tram 28 and the Bertrand bookshop — one of the oldest still trading anywhere — on the doorstep. Baixa-Chiado on the blue metro line is the nearest station, and bus 758 stops at the square. The hotel arranges airport transfers on request; it has no car park of its own but offers valet parking at the neighbouring Camões car park.

Spa

The Wellness & Fitness Centre on the fourth floor has a sauna, a sensory shower and a double treatment room offering massages and targeted therapeutic treatments with Susanne Kaufmann products. It is open daily from 7 am to 11 pm and reserved for hotel guests.

Sports & leisure

The gym is fitted with Technogym equipment — treadmill, elliptical trainer, spinning bike and a Kinesis wall for strength and cardio — along with a bench, weights, kettlebells, a boxing bag and kit for functional and circuit training; sessions with a personal trainer can be arranged. The Lost in Lisbon concierge service helps shape time in the city, and the sixth-floor rooftop is kept for hotel guests.

Restaurants & bars

Eating and drinking revolve around Portuguese cooking and the views.

  • BAHR — fifth-floor restaurant with a counter bar and a relaxed mood, a tribute to the artists of 19th-century Lisbon; Portuguese cuisine, open to non-residents
  • The Terrace — BAHR’s terrace over the Tagus and the city’s roofs, serving light meals through the day and drinks at sunset
  • Rooftop — guests-only top-floor terrace with light meals by day, drinks until late and a Sunday brunch
  • Pastelaria — street-level patisserie facing Praça Luís de Camões, baking sweet and savoury Portuguese pastries in house every day
  • Mezzanine — intimate bar on the mezzanine for light bites, cocktails and pastries from the Pastelaria
Pets

Pets are not allowed at the hotel.
