Hotel Copernicus

About this hotel

General information

Hotel Copernicus is an intimate five-star house on Kanonicza Street, the oldest street of medieval Kraków, winding down to the foot of Wawel Hill. Among its Renaissance neighbours it stands out for a broad brick Gothic façade: a fifteenth-century palace raised from two earlier houses, once home to the cathedral canons. Small stone windows and surrounds, Renaissance windows and a carved mid-sixteenth-century portal still mark the front.

Inside are twenty-nine rooms and suites, each furnished individually. The palace keeps nine wooden beamed ceilings from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, wall paintings from several periods and nineteenth-century panelling, with modern comforts fitted carefully around them. A Relais & Châteaux member, the hotel has the Copernicus restaurant, a bar, a summer roof terrace and a L’Occitane spa in the Gothic cellars, while the Chimney Room, home to a collection of old manuscripts, hosts meetings and small celebrations for up to 20 guests.

Location

The hotel sits on Kanonicza Street in the heart of Kraków’s Old Town, below Wawel Hill and its royal castle; the Main Square, museums, galleries and concert venues are an easy walk away. Kraków Airport is 15 km off, and the hotel arranges transfers for a fee. The street lies in a pedestrian zone: cars may pull up at the door from 20:00 to 09:30, while during the day guests stop at a marked bay nearby, from where the car is taken to a paid, guarded car park and brought back on request; taxis can reach the door around the clock.

Spa

Copernicus Spa by L’Occitane occupies the vaulted Gothic cellars: a small, boutique space with a pool, a dry sauna, a relaxation area and two treatment rooms, one for a single guest and one for couples. Treatments use L’Occitane products – Immortelle facials with gua sha stones, aromachology massages, an almond massage, a Provençal deep-tissue massage, a head and neck massage, and a body scrub made with almond oil and salt from the nearby Wieliczka mine. Half-day spa programmes come with a three-course lunch. Hotel guests use the spa free of charge.

Sports & leisure

The spa pool and sauna cover swimming and unwinding. The hotel arranges guided walks around Kraków as well as trips out of town with transport and a guide – to the Wieliczka Salt Mine, the Tatras and Ojców National Park.

Restaurants & bars

Dining moves between the Renaissance rooms and the roof:

  • Copernicus – the restaurant, set in Renaissance interiors, serving Polish court cuisine in a modern reading: mushrooms, quail, game, crayfish, asparagus; a three-course lunch on weekdays, five- or seven-course tasting menus in the evening, and breakfast in the morning
  • Copernicus bar – the hotel’s intimate bar
  • Roof terrace – a summer bar pouring drinks and wines from the well-stocked hotel cellar, with an unusual view of the royal castle on Wawel Hill, open in season

The restaurant also hosts private dinners, and room service is available.

Swimming

The pool is part of Copernicus Spa by L’Occitane and is free for hotel guests.

Pets

Small pets are welcome for an additional fee.
