About this hotel
General information
The Peninsula Manila was the group's first hotel beyond Hong Kong, and the city still calls it simply "the Manila Pen". It rises as two towers joined by a shared lobby in Makati's business district. That lobby is the hotel's centre of gravity: a 12-metre sculpture, the Sunburst, set beneath a sky-coloured dome lined in silver leaf, twin sweeping staircases and a pair of large hand-stitched tapestries depicting Philippine landscapes.
There are 351 rooms and suites, styled in a contemporary Filipino idiom of natural textures, warm wood, rattan and woven detail in muted blues, greys and greens. Outside lies a tropical garden of palms, a koi pond and an outdoor pool, while the dining runs from a French restaurant and Asian kitchen to afternoon tea in the lobby and the hotel's own patisserie.
Location
The hotel sits at the heart of Makati's business district in Metro Manila, among office towers, shopping galleries and restaurants. Manila's international airport is about 9 km away and the domestic airport 6 km; the concierge arranges airport pick-ups, and the hotel has its own helipad for arrivals by helicopter. Suite guests can ride around Makati in the hotel's own jeepney free of charge, booked at least 48 hours ahead.
Spa
The Peninsula Spa draws on both Western and Eastern traditions. Its signature is Filipino bodywork, notably hilot massage with ventosa cupping, alongside massages and face and body rituals; treatments can also be taken in the room. The spa is open to guests aged 18 and over.
Sports & leisure
The fitness centre has Life Fitness cardio machines, Keiser spin bikes, strength stations, free weights and an InBody body-composition analyser, with personal trainers, stretching sessions and regular yoga classes. Beside it lies a 22-metre outdoor pool in the tropical garden. The Peninsula Academy introduces Filipino culture through private classes and outings:
- a walking tour of the old walled city of Intramuros;
- workshops in burda hand embroidery and puni, the folding of young coconut leaves into decorative shapes;
- a Filipino cooking class in the hotel kitchens, and a weekend chef-led visit to a Makati village market followed by a hands-on cooking session;
- The Art of the Pour, a mixology lesson;
- an introduction to Philippine contemporary art, a session on Philippine South Sea pearls and a flight-simulator experience.
For children
Young guests have Playful Lively Activities, a programme of Filipino games, scavenger hunts, exercise sessions and other play that lets children meet one another. Through The Peninsula Academy, children from age 4 can also join Little Chefs, a three-hour class in making halo-halo and decorating a chocolate Peninsula bear; parents are welcome to take part.
