About this hotel
General information
Amanpulo occupies the whole of Pamalican Island in the Cuyo archipelago of northern Palawan. Powdery white beaches and coral reefs ring the island, while its interior is a thicket of old trees crossed by sandy tracks that lead to empty coves and lookouts above the jungle. Guests get around in club cars, and an organic farm on the island grows the fruit, vegetables and herbs used in the kitchens.
Accommodation is in casitas on the beach, on the hillside or among the treetops, modelled on the traditional Filipino hut: broad timber decks, hammocks, vaulted wooden ceilings, pebble-washed walls and bathrooms finished in Cebu marble. The villas come with their own beach frontage, pool, chef and butler. Every stay includes daily breakfast, afternoon tea at the Clubhouse, non-alcoholic in-room refreshments, a daily wellness class, a morning snorkelling trip from the beach and use of non-motorised watersports equipment.
Location
Pamalican Island lies in the Cuyo archipelago of northern Palawan and is reached only by the resort's own flights: a 12-seat twin-engine turboprop leaves the Amanpulo Lounge hangar at Clark airport and lands on the island's private airstrip after about 90 minutes, and private charters can be arranged on request. Clark is 116 km, roughly two hours by road, from Manila. For same-day connections, a resort representative meets guests at Manila's international airport or at Clark and drives them to the lounge free of charge.
Spa
The Aman Spa sits on the northern hillside at the highest point of the island, with six spacious treatment suites, open-air relaxation salas, hydrotherapy suites, a finishing salon, a steam room and a cold plunge pool. The menu includes the Filipino hilot massage, which alternates heat and cold using banana leaves and cold-pressed coconut oil, and the Seven Seas Massage with warm bamboo and Himalayan stones in the outdoor spa cabana, along with a ritual of breathwork, cold immersion and contrast therapy. Private yoga and meditation sessions take place in the studio or in the Healing Garden on the island's summit overlooking the sea, and group classes run daily. Visiting wellness practitioners add their own treatments through the year.
Sports & leisure
Coral reefs covering more than 7 km² begin 300 m from the shore, and the resort protects the surrounding waters as a marine sanctuary. Its PADI Dive Centre on the north-western shore teaches everything from Open Water to Enriched Air Nitrox and night and deep specialities, and runs guided dives with a personal divemaster; most sites are within ten minutes by boat, with visibility of 20–30 m and water at 26–30 °C. In the sandy-bottomed lagoon, the Kite & Surf Centre has IKO-certified instructors, Naish equipment and radio headsets linking riders to their instructor; according to the resort, the kitesurfing season usually runs from December to March.
- snorkelling, kayaking, sailing lessons and fishing with the resort's guides
- sunset, moonlight and starlight cruises on the pontoon boat, island hopping and private charters
- a picnic on the Manamoc sandbar (seasonal, December to May, weather permitting) and a hike to the highest point of Manamoc Island
- tennis, including lessons and matches with a resident pro
- a fitness centre, a Pilates studio with reformers, a yoga and meditation pavilion and the Jungle Trail obstacle course
- cycling, birdwatching and late-afternoon go-karting on the airstrip when there are no flights
- stargazing through a refracting telescope
Pamalican is a nesting site for green and hawksbill turtles, which come ashore each year between June and October, according to the resort.
For children
For young guests, the dive centre runs PADI Bubble Maker sessions, a first taste of scuba diving overseen by PADI professionals.
Restaurants & bars
Menus draw on locally caught seafood and organic produce from the island farm; several venues open seasonally:
- Clubhouse — the restaurant at the heart of the island, with solid timber columns and classic Filipino furnishings: Filipino heirloom recipes and Southeast Asian favourites from breakfast to dinner, indoors or by the pool, with live guitar in the evening; three open-sided poolside salas with daybeds for smoothies, light lunches and afternoon tea
- Lobby Bar at the Clubhouse — cocktails, spirits, an international wine list, Filipino rum and cigars
- The Lagoon Club — Japanese cuisine on the secluded east coast: sushi, sashimi, Wagyu beef and dishes from the Akari menu (seasonal)
- Beach Club — on the sand on the western shore: Mediterranean and Italian cooking, seafood and live lobster, sunset cocktails and Amanpulo's own gin made with botanicals from the island farm (seasonal)
- The Picnic Grove — relaxed lunches under the trees a few metres from the beach: wood-fired pizza, salads from the farm and homemade desserts (seasonal)
- Kawayan Bar — a floating bamboo bar just offshore for picnics and all-day lounging between swims
- Destination Dining — private meals in secluded coves, high on the hillside with sea views or in hidden beachfront salas: themed barbecue menus cooked by a private chef, a Filipino barbecue and lechon, the spit-roasted suckling pig
Swimming
White-sand beaches encircle the entire island, so it can be walked round barefoot; umbrellas and sun loungers are set out on the beach by the Beach Club. A snorkelling trip leaves from the beach every morning, the house reef is home to batfish, wrasse and parrotfish, and the floating bamboo Kawayan Bar is moored a few metres offshore. The main pool is at the Clubhouse; the Beach Pool, Treetop Pool and Grand Beach Pool casitas have their own pools, as does every villa.
