About this hotel
General information
Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba is a contemporary take on the Andean hacienda, set in the Sacred Valley of the Incas between Cusco and Machu Picchu. The estate covers roughly 100 acres of farmland ringed by steep green mountains, and at 2,900 m it sits lower and milder than Cusco, which makes it a gentle place to spend the first days at altitude.
There are just 36 rooms: 12 in the main Casa Hacienda and 24 free-standing casitas scattered across the grounds, each looking out over the valley. Interiors draw on local history, with colonial furniture, original Inca masks and hand-carved woodwork. Much of the kitchen's produce comes from the hotel's own organic farm, a set of guided walks on and around the estate is included in the stay, and families are made especially welcome.
Location
The hotel stands in the village of Huayoccari in Urubamba province, at km 63 of the Cusco–Pisac–Calca–Urubamba road. Cusco is about 1 hour 15 minutes away by car via Pisac, or around 1 hour 30 minutes via Chinchero. Ollantaytambo, the Maras salt pans, the circular terraces of Moray, the Pisac ruins and the Inkariy Museum are all within reach, and the hotel can arrange transfers from the airport or the railway station.
Spa
Mayu Spa takes its name from the Quechua word for river and has a rustic, Andean-inspired design. Facilities include a hot plunge pool, a dry sauna and four private treatment rooms, and every product used is fully natural. Alongside lies the Healing Garden, where guests pick medicinal herbs for their own treatment and where ancestral Andean plants that have fallen out of use are being revived. The menu covers deep-tissue and de-stress massages (also for couples), hot stones, reflexology, head and foot treatments, a hydrating facial, a kiwicha exfoliation and herbal garden pindas.
Sports & leisure
Guided outings on the estate are included in the stay; further excursions across the valley are offered at extra cost. The programme includes:
- making chicha de jora, the ancestral Inca corn drink, from harvest to tasting
- a sunset hillside walk with stories of Andean astronomy and medicinal plants
- birdwatching on the trails around the hotel, from hawks to hummingbirds
- the climb up Challa Huasi hill to a viewpoint over Huayoccari
- the Inkariy Museum, devoted to eight of ancient Peru's key cultures, the Incas among them
- an 8 km downhill stretch of Inca trail from Chinchero to Urquillos
- a full-day trek from Chinchero over a 4,200 m pass to the ruins of Huchuy Qosqo and the town of Lamay
- a hike of about three hours to Yanacocha lagoon
- an Andean picnic above Huaypo lagoon
- cooking classes, wine tastings with the sommelier, a pachamanca lunch cooked underground, and sundowners
- coca-leaf reading and a Payment to the Earth ceremony led by a local shaman
- a private explorer guide and binoculars for hire
For children
The hotel presents itself as a family destination. Children can join a Treasure Hunt with tasks and prizes and receive an Andes Kit Explorer (backpack, cap, magnifying glass, pencil and granola), and the Inkariy Museum and the Huaypo lagoon picnic are the outings the hotel suggests for younger travellers. Some categories take a single sofa bed.
Restaurants & bars
The restaurant and its adjoining terraces (72 seats) serve Peruvian cooking built on local produce, some of it — red quinoa, Urubamba corn, native potatoes — grown on the hotel's organic farm, with views across the valley to the mountains. A buffet breakfast is included, and in the afternoon guests are offered a complimentary tea time with Inkaterra's own organic black tea. The bar pours macerated piscos and a broad wine list; private dinners, a chef's table tasting menu and pizza nights can be arranged on request.

The 36 rooms are split between 12 in the main Casa Hacienda and 24 free-standing casitas on the grounds. Every one has a terrace with valley views, and interiors pair colonial furniture with Andean textiles.
