Monasterio, A Belmond Hotel, Cusco

About this hotel

General information

Monasterio rests on the foundations of the palace of the Inca emperor Amaru Qhata, whose stonework still sits perfectly in place. In 1595 the site became the San Antonio Abad monastery, and an ornate baroque chapel soon followed within its walls. With its stone arches, cloisters and gilded detail, the Spanish-Colonial Baroque building is a protected landmark designated by Peru’s National Institute of Culture.

Life here revolves around a cloistered courtyard shaded by a 300-year-old Andean cedar, the last of its kind in Cusco. The walls hold one of the country’s most important collections of 18th-century religious painting from the Cusco School. The 97 rooms and 20 suites include oxygen-enriched spaces to ease the altitude, and evenings at El Tupay come with live opera.

Location

The hotel sits in Cusco’s historic centre at around 3,300 m, two blocks – about five minutes on foot – from the Plaza de Armas, with the artists’ quarter of San Blas some ten minutes’ walk away. Alejandro Velasco Astete Airport (CUZ) is 6 km off, roughly 25 minutes by car, and about 90 minutes’ flying time from Lima. Poroy station, for the 3.5-hour train to Machu Picchu, is 11 km away, Wanchaq station 2 km, and Ollantaytambo station around an hour and a half by road. Transfers with an English-speaking guide and driver can be arranged.

Spa

Rather than a full spa, Monasterio has a candlelit treatment suite set beside a flower-filled courtyard with fountains. The menu includes the signature Monasterio Massage, an Altitude Acclimation treatment, a couples’ massage, reflexology, hot stone massage, an Energizing Ritual with quartz and coca leaves, and both full and express facials.

Sports & leisure

Leisure here is cultural and culinary. Experts in religious art lead daily tours of the Cusco School collection, Gregorian chants are sung in the chapel, and El Tupay hosts opera evenings, including the Pisco & Opera and Art, Cuisine & Opera formats. Guests can join an Andean spirits and pisco tasting, take a cooking class or spend a day as a chef in the kitchen. The chapel and four event spaces lend themselves to weddings and private occasions. Sacsayhuamán and the Qorikancha sun temple are close by, with the Sacred Valley – Ollantaytambo, Pisac and Moray – further out.

For children

Every room category takes two adults and one child under 11 using the existing bedding. Teenagers aged 12 to 17 need an extra bed, offered in most categories subject to availability and at an additional charge.

Restaurants & bars

The kitchens draw on seasonal produce from Peru’s coast, highlands and jungle, and a brunch is served on Sundays.

  • Oqre – Peruvian cooking by chef Jorge Muñoz in the cloisters overlooking the leafy courtyard, built around loche squash, native potatoes, paiche and Peruvian lamb; lunch and dinner
  • El Tupay – international fine dining beneath stone arches and chandeliers, with dinner set to live opera
  • Oqre Bar – creative cocktails and small plates in the lobby
Pets

Pets are accepted in eight designated rooms across the Superior Room, Superior Room with Oxygen, Deluxe Room with Oxygen and Junior Suite with Oxygen categories. Each room takes one small cat or dog of up to 10 kg, provided with a bed and food and water bowls. Registered guide dogs stay free of charge.
