The Santa Maria, a Luxury Collection Hotel & Golf Resort, Panama City

About this hotel

General information

The Santa Maria is an urban golf resort in the Santa María business district on the eastern side of Panama City. The building looks out over the greens of its own 18-hole course, so the city feels a long way off: shaded paths, carefully kept grounds and a pool facing the fairways.

The interiors draw on Panamanian heritage, with handcrafted furniture, woven baskets and textiles, pieces by local artisans and, in the suites, details in wood recovered from the depths of Lake Gatún. There are four restaurants and a bar, a spa with a steam room, a fitness centre and a concierge team that helps plan time in the city and beyond.

Location

The hotel stands on Santa Maria Boulevard in Panama City’s Santa María business district, a few minutes’ drive from Costa del Este and the archaeological site of Panamá Viejo. Panama City’s international airport is about 14 km away, and a private transfer runs around the clock on advance request. A metro station is nearby, and guests have free underground self-parking and valet parking.

Spa

The Spa covers massages, wraps, body scrubs, facials, manicures and pedicures, and scalp and hair treatments, with a steam room in its wet area. The signature Holy Spirit Orchid Renewal massage takes its cue from the Flor del Espíritu Santo, Panama’s national flower. The menu also lists hot volcanic-stone massage, a herbal-poultice massage, a cacao wrap, a white tea and ginger ritual, a gold facial and rituals for two. The spa opens daily, and treatments are booked ahead.

Sports & leisure

The centrepiece is the Santa Maria Golf & Country Club course: 18 holes, par 72, with rolling fairways, contoured greens, sculpted bunkers and four sets of tees for every level of player. There is a driving range, a putting green, equipment hire, lessons and a golf academy for players of all ages; tee times are booked by phone. Guests also have a complimentary fitness centre with cardio machines, free weights and strength equipment, and an outdoor pool with cabanas.

The concierge arranges visits to the ruins of Panamá Viejo, a 16th-century city, and walks through Casco Viejo (Casco Antiguo) with its colonial, Republican, French and Art Deco façades. Guests can watch ships pass through the Panama Canal or spend a day at a sandy beach or in the rainforest, where howler monkeys, toucans and sloths live in the wild.

Restaurants & bars

Dining runs from the first coffee of the morning to a late steak dinner.

  • The Grill House FSH & STK — a steakhouse with seafood, USDA Prime beef and a considered wine list; lunch daily, dinner Monday to Saturday
  • Mestizo Restaurant — Panamanian cooking with Mediterranean touches, served in the dining room, on the terrace or on an open-air plaza; breakfast through dinner
  • AQVA Pool Bar — international dishes and cocktails on the poolside terrace, looking over the golf course
  • Coffee Shop & Deli — Geisha coffee, light bites and pastries from early morning into the evening
  • Mestizo Bar — cocktails built on local ingredients, among works by Panamanian artists

In-room dining is available around the clock.
