About this hotel
General information
Hotel La Compañía del Valle sits in the crater of an extinct volcano, in the valley of El Valle de Antón, ringed by the La India Dormida, Cerro Gaital and Las Tres Marías mountains. The idea is a Tuscan country house set among tropical hills: warm earth tones, Spanish tiles, stone walkways, arcades and an enclosed courtyard pool framed by gardens. An art and wellness hotel in The Unbound Collection by Hyatt, it is the countryside counterpart to Hotel La Compañía in Panama City’s Casco Viejo.
There are 70 rooms and suites, each with a balcony or terrace facing the mountains or the garden courtyard. The grounds are anchored by a sculpture park of more than 200 works, arranged around the five elements of earth, fire, water, metal and wood. The rest of the stay revolves around the Elysium spa and its underground Roman baths, three restaurants and the trails of the crater.
Location
The hotel is in the town of El Valle de Antón, Coclé province, on the floor of an extinct volcanic crater about two hours’ drive west of Panama City. Panama City’s international airport is about 149 km away. A private transfer links the hotel with Hotel La Compañía in Casco Viejo, and parking is valet only.
Spa
Elysium Spa & Wellness House takes its cue from Roman bathhouses set into volcanic terrain. Facilities include thermal pools, a saltwater pool, underground Roman baths, a hammam, an aromatherapy steam room, a Himalayan salt room, a mud therapy room, a jacuzzi and a sensory deprivation pool, along with suites given over to wine and cacao therapy and terraces looking out to La India Dormida. Treatments range from wine therapy and a lavender ritual to cacao, Geisha coffee and Panamanian citrus wraps, with the signature Feel Elysium massage alongside Swedish, deep-tissue, sports and prenatal massage. Every treatment includes use of the salt room, steam room, mud room, jacuzzi and sensory deprivation pool.
Sports & leisure
The hotel has a fitness centre and a pickleball court, and the concierge arranges guided hikes and e-bike rides. Guests can join yoga sessions, from sunrise practice and breathwork to guided meditation, a session with sound and a cacao ceremony, with private classes on request. Around the hotel:
- the Ruta de la Caldera, 30 km of trails through the crater on five routes, among them Cerro Gaital and La India Dormida, with rock formations, wide views and native plants and wildlife
- a short, steep walk along the crater rim with views to the sea, best at sunrise
- a night walk in the Río Antón canyon to hear and see the forest after dark
- waterfalls with natural pools, including a 35-metre cascade with canopy walks and a zip line
- a rainforest loop to the valley’s curious square-trunked trees
- volcanic hot springs with a mud face treatment
- the market, cafés and restaurants of El Valle de Antón
Restaurants & bars
The hotel’s three restaurants each take their name from an element, and room service is available.
- FUEGO, The Art of Fire — open-flame, charcoal cooking of meat and seafood, indoors or outdoors
- TIEMPO, The Art of Travel — an art-filled, all-day room for healthy breakfasts, lunch and dinner from an international menu, with outdoor tables overlooking the garden and pond
- TERRA, The Soul of Earth — a light-filled room serving hearty Mediterranean vegetarian dishes built on produce from the valley
