Mandarin Oriental, Muscat

About this hotel

General information

Mandarin Oriental, Muscat sits directly on Shatti Al Qurum beach, in one of the capital’s most sought-after districts, between the sea, the diplomatic quarter and the Royal Opera House Muscat. The building faces both the Gulf of Oman and the Hajar Mountains, and each of its 150 keys – 103 rooms and 47 suites – has a balcony or terrace looking out to sea or towards the ridges.

Interiors pair contemporary design with Oriental touches and Omani craft: carved woodwork, handmade mosaics, ornate lamps, traditional weave patterns and artworks made for the hotel. There is a spa with a traditional hammam, the Italian restaurant Essenza, The Mandarin Cake Shop and a Club Lounge with a sea-facing terrace, while the 800 m² Al Thuraya Grand Ballroom, also with sea views, hosts weddings of up to 500 guests. The hotel is certified by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC).

Location

The hotel stands on the Shatti Al Qurum seafront in central Muscat, next to the diplomatic quarter and the Royal Opera House Muscat. Muttrah Souq is about 15 minutes away by car, the National Museum of Oman and the Grand Mosque about 20 minutes, and Muscat International Airport is 20–25 km away, roughly a 20-minute drive depending on traffic. Nizwa and Jebel Akhdar are around an hour and a half by road.

Spa

The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Muscat combines the group’s Asian-inspired therapies, rooted in the Eastern idea of balancing the five elements, with local healing traditions. Its eight treatment rooms, including a couple’s suite with its own steam room and private terrace, are filled with daylight and face the sea. At its heart is a mosaic-lined traditional hammam where Moroccan techniques meet modern therapies; there is also an experience shower, a steam room, scrub rooms, relaxation lounges, open-air terraces overlooking the gulf and a boutique selling the products used in treatments. Minimum age is 16.

Sports & leisure

The fitness centre is equipped by Technogym and open around the clock to hotel guests; trainers build personal programmes after a one-to-one consultation, and an outdoor studio with mountain views hosts yoga, Pilates and group classes. On Shatti Al Qurum beach guests can take out kayaks and stand-up paddleboards or join a sailing course. Further afield, the hotel arranges:

  • boat trips to the Daymaniyat Islands for dolphins, whale watching and snorkelling
  • dives on the coral reef off Qantab beach and snorkelling along the rocky coast
  • a sunset cruise from the historic port of Muttrah
  • fishing trips with local fishermen from nearby Omani villages
  • a journey into the Wahiba Sands to learn about the life of nomadic communities
  • an evening at the Royal Opera House Muscat
For children

The Kids’ Club welcomes children aged 4–12 (younger ones with an adult) five days a week; its mascot is Nadira, an Arabian leopard, and the space is designed for play and small discoveries. A separate children’s pool sits beside the main pool, Rawya and Essenza have children’s menus, and families can book connecting rooms and suites, rollaway beds and family excursions such as the Daymaniyat Islands, sea cruises and diving at Qantab beach.

Restaurants & bars

The restaurants and bars range across Italian, Mediterranean and Asian cooking.

  • Essenza – Italian classics from traditional recipes, family-style sharing and tableside service; indoor room, terrace and a mezzanine cocktail lounge
  • Essenza Bar – an intimate evening bar with cicchetti-style bites and signature drinks
  • Rawya – all-day restaurant pairing Mediterranean cooking with fresh Omani seafood in light dishes for sharing
  • Sawa Lounge – the lobby lounge for light meals, desserts, coffee and afternoon tea

  • The Club Lounge – a lounge with a live kitchen and sea-facing terrace for Club room and suite guests, serving breakfast, afternoon treats, evening drinks and canapés
Swimming

The hotel opens onto Shatti Al Qurum beach, where kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and sailing lessons are on offer. At the centre of the grounds lie an outdoor lap pool and a smaller children’s pool, with loungers, private cabanas and a bar by the water; the pool is open daily from sunrise to sunset.
