About this hotel
General information
Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort sits on the Saiq plateau in the Hajar Mountains, some 2,000 metres above sea level, right along the curving rim of a deep canyon. It ranks among the highest-lying luxury resorts in the world: the air is markedly cooler than on the coast, and the view shifts with the light, from sunrise over the cliffs to a night sky crowded with stars.
The architecture is a modern take on Omani tradition — low buildings in the colour of mountain stone, a central courtyard around an open fire and a tower modelled on a historic fort. There are 115 keys: 82 canyon-view rooms and 33 villas with private pools, the largest being the two-storey Three Bedroom Royal Mountain Villa. The resort is best known for its viewing platform above the gorge, a spa with a hammam, guided walks through mountain villages and a via ferrata strung across the canyon wall.
Location
The resort lies on the Saiq plateau of Jebel Akhdar, about 30 minutes' drive from the old city of Nizwa. Muscat International Airport is 185 km away, roughly two to two and a half hours by road, and the UAE about five hours. The mountain is reached through a checkpoint that admits only 4x4 vehicles. The resort arranges airport transfers by 4x4 as well as transfers from the foot of the mountain (around 35 minutes), and there is secure parking for guests' cars at the checkpoint.
Spa
Anantara Spa is a calm space of local stone with views over the canyon. It has a private hammam suite, five treatment rooms including couples' suites, separate men's and women's thermal areas with aroma sauna, steam room and experience showers, relaxation rooms, a garden with loungers, and an indoor pool and Jacuzzi. Signature rituals draw on local ingredients — Damask roses from the mountain terraces, pomegranate and Omani frankincense — alongside a royal hammam ritual in the Turkish or Moroccan style, Thai herbal compress massage, Elemis facials, yoga above the canyon and wellness programmes of one or several days.
Sports & leisure
Activities are shaped by the mountains and the canyon.
- Jabal Activity Wall — nearly 200 m of via ferrata along the cliff edge, zip lines across the gorge, a steel suspension bridge and abseiling
- guided hikes: an easy trail linking three mountain villages past terraced fields, ancient falaj irrigation channels and a traditional rose-water distillery, and a full-day trek to a well-preserved village some 400 years old
- archery, a floodlit tennis court, a fitness centre and bicycles
- sunrise yoga on the viewing platform above the canyon and hot yoga in the hammam
- open-air cinema by the canyon, Spice Spoons Thai and Omani cooking classes, mountain picnics and driving tours of the region
- a library with computers and a digital museum on Oman's landscapes and heritage
For children
Younger children have Asfour Kids Club, with indoor and outdoor play areas, a trampoline, swings, a slide and climbing frames; teenagers have Jabal Teens Club with a games console, table tennis, billiards and hiking trips. Children aged 8 and over can try abseiling from the cliff and archery, a shaded children's pool sits beside the main pool, and babysitting can be booked in advance.
Restaurants & bars
The restaurants gather around the central courtyard and the pool, with views of the mountains and the canyon.
- Al Maisan — all-day dining above the central courtyard: breakfast buffet and international dinners, with a canyon-view terrace
- Bella Vista — contemporary Italian cooking beside the infinity pool
- Al Baha — courtyard café and deli for coffee, juices, light meals, pastries and afternoon tea
- Al Burj — lounge on the upper floor of the tower, serving drinks, light bites and shisha
- Designer Dining — private dinners with bespoke menus, including on the viewing platform or a glass walkway at the canyon's edge
- Spice Spoons — hands-on Thai and Omani cooking sessions
In-room and in-villa dining is available around the clock.
Swimming
The heated infinity pool hangs over the canyon, with a viewing terrace, two Jacuzzis and a shaded children's pool alongside. The spa has an indoor pool, and every villa has its own temperature-controlled pool — plunge pools in the garden villas, infinity pools on the cliff edge.
