Alila Hinu Bay

About this hotel

General information

Alila Hinu Bay spreads across 45 hectares of the Arabian Sea coast in southern Dhofar, close to the old port of Mirbat, with the sea and a lagoon on one side and the Dhofar mountains on the other. Its low buildings reinterpret traditional Omani architecture in a contemporary idiom, use local natural materials and follow the lie of the land, each placed to open up views of the sea or the lagoon.

There are 96 rooms and 16 villas with their own pools, a private beach and two pools. Sustainability runs through the resort: some of the kitchen produce comes from its own orchards and gardens, and a zero-food-waste programme is in place. The Alila Moments programme is a highlight — hosted experiences that introduce Dhofar through frankincense, camel milk, local seafood and the mountain landscapes inland.

Location

The resort sits on Hinu Bay in Dhofar, on Oman’s southern coast, near Mirbat and Mirbat Castle. Salalah International Airport is 87 km away. The Khor Rori nature reserve, the Tawi Atair sinkhole and the Jebel Samhan mountains are close by, and Wadi Darbat with its waterfalls is about 45 minutes’ drive to the north. Guests arriving by car have free self-parking and valet parking.

Spa

Spa Alila offers tailored treatments built around natural products. In the spa kitchen, guests learn to blend their own scrubs and remedies from carefully sourced local ingredients. Signature rituals include Sacred Resin, built around frankincense: guests make their own scrub, followed by a body exfoliation, an oil massage and a head massage, with a five-course frankincense-scented dinner in the evening and a spa kit to take home. The Camel Milk Ritual pairs a camel-milk mocktail class with a spa class on the milk’s skincare benefits.

Sports & leisure

The gym, with bikes, treadmills and weight machines, is open around the clock (adults only). A daily schedule of activities runs for adults and children, among them kayaking, sailing trips to see dolphins and camel rides. The Alila Moments programme includes:

  • Journey Above the Clouds — a five-hour 4WD expedition with a local guide across the Dhofar highlands: Gravity Point, ancient baobabs, a hidden oasis, a vast sinkhole and Taiq Cave, ending with a picnic on Jebel Samhan above the clouds
  • Sea & Sustainability — a visit with the chef to Oman’s only abalone farm, followed by a six-course abalone dinner at Seasalt
  • hiking trails in the Jebel Samhan mountains and trips to Wadi Darbat, the Tawi Atair sinkhole and Mirbat Castle
For children

Play Alila, the kids’ club, keeps young guests busy with indoor and outdoor activities inspired by the local landscape and culture. The resort’s daily schedule includes activities for children, cots and rollaway beds are available on request, and there are interconnecting rooms.

Restaurants & bars

The kitchens rely on the local catch and on produce from the resort’s own gardens; breakfast is served at The Orchard.

  • Seasalt — Asian cooking with a Southeast Asian focus: the local catch of the day, cuts from the grill and views across the bay
  • The Orchard — dishes inspired by the Frankincense Route, from the Arabian Peninsula to the Mediterranean, using produce from the resort’s gardens
  • Lobby Lounge — light bites and Middle Eastern specialities with sea views
  • Oasis Pool Bar — palm-fringed poolside bar for lunch, cocktails and mocktails, freshly baked bites and daybeds
  • In-Room Dining — a selection of dishes served in the room or on the terrace
Swimming

The resort opens onto its own sandy beach and lagoon. The saltwater SeaSalt Pool looks out over the Arabian Sea and is lined with spacious cabanas and loungers; the second, the Oasis Pool, is fringed with palms, and the villas have private pools.
