Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara

About this hotel

General information

Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara sits on Oman’s southern coast between its own Arabian Sea beach and a freshwater lagoon, right beside Al Baleed Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its architecture takes its cue from the country’s old coastal forts, and the buildings are linked by palm-lined walkways, gardens and water features — the grounds alone hold 691 coconut palms.

There are 136 rooms, villas and pool villas, making this the only luxury pool-villa resort in Salalah. Interiors pair Anantara’s Thai roots with Omani detail, and every villa comes with its own villa host. The resort is known for spa rituals built around Dhofari frankincense, three restaurants with distinct cuisines and easy access to the heritage sites of the Land of Frankincense. During the khareef monsoon season the surrounding mountains turn green and misty; the rest of the year brings warm beach weather.

Location

The resort lies in the Al Baleed district on the Salalah coast, the main city of Dhofar, immediately next to Al Baleed Archaeological Park and the Museum of the Land of Frankincense. The city centre and Salalah International Airport are about 15 minutes away by car, and the resort arranges airport transfers on request with 48 hours’ notice. Wadi Darbat is a 30–45-minute drive, Al Mughsail Beach roughly an hour, and Muscat about nine hours by road.

Spa

Anantara Spa brings together Omani beauty rituals, traditional Thai massage and Ayurveda. Facilities include a traditional hammam, five treatment rooms, a dedicated Thai massage suite, a steam room, a nail salon and separate men’s and women’s areas with changing rooms, relaxation lounges and experience showers. The signature Frankincense Ritual is a 90-minute four-hand massage for face and body using frankincense oil from Salalah; other options include coconut and pomegranate journeys, Shirodhara and Abhyanga Ayurvedic therapies, Elemis treatments and a hair and beauty salon for men and women. Wellness by Anantara programmes run for three, five or seven days, combining a consultation, healthy dining, daily training and spa treatments.

Sports & leisure

On site there is a heated 44-metre infinity pool, a padel court, a mini-golf course set in the gardens, the open-air Jungle Gym with ropes and monkey bars, and a 24-hour fitness centre with Technogym equipment and a space for yoga and stretching; yoga, fitness and Thai boxing classes are offered, as well as horse rides along the beach. Outside the khareef monsoon season the resort arranges deep-sea fishing, two-hour boat trips to watch dolphins and turtles, traditional dhow cruises to the bays of Mirbat with snorkelling or at sunset, and diving and snorkelling with a partner centre. Excursions range from a trek to the 1,700-metre Jebel Samhan plateau, a mountain safari through Dhofar to Wadi Darbat and an expedition to the lost city of Ubar to overnight desert camping, a Salalah city tour and birdwatching for flamingos and other species. At the resort there are Spice Spoons cooking classes, a frankincense-tree planting experience and a boat ride to Al Baleed Archaeological Park.

For children

The Al Bahhara Kids Club runs supervised indoor and outdoor activities for children aged 4–12, from crafts and sandcastle building to treasure hunts and karaoke. Teenagers have their own Alshirae Play Space with a PS5, table tennis, table football, air hockey, billiards and board games. Children can also join swimming lessons (ages 5–12), cooking classes, Thai boxing and horse riding, or try kids’ spa and salon treatments. The pool has mini sunbeds and cabanas for younger guests, the restaurants cater for children’s tastes and dietary needs, a welcome kit awaits on arrival, and a certified babysitting service can be booked 24 hours ahead. Two- and three-bedroom villas suit families.

Restaurants & bars

Three restaurants cover international, Asian and Mediterranean cooking, joined by a beach bar and an evening lounge.

  • Sakalan — international buffet for breakfast and dinner
  • Mekong — Asian restaurant by the lagoon serving Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese dishes at dinner
  • Al Mina — Mediterranean restaurant and bar focused on seafood, open from noon until late
  • Al Mare by Al Mina — Mediterranean beach bar in the afternoon
  • Dakar Lounge — evening lounge for drinks, light bites and relaxed music

The resort also offers Designer Dining with tailored private menus, Spice Spoons cooking classes with Thai and Arabian dishes, a sunrise breakfast in a beach cabana, floating breakfasts in villa pools, in-villa barbecues, picnics with Asian, Arabic or Mediterranean menus at scenic spots around Dhofar, and 24-hour in-room dining.

Swimming

The resort has a private 250-metre white-sand beach on the Arabian Sea, with beachfront villas opening straight onto the sand. The main pool is a heated 44-metre infinity pool with loungers, cabanas and beanbags, and a freshwater lagoon lies on the other side of the grounds. Pool villas have their own pools and sundecks: in the one-bedroom villas the pool measures 20 m² and is 1.2 metres deep, and some villa pools are temperature-controlled.
