Storfjord Hotel

About this hotel

General information

Storfjord Hotel sits among pine trees on a hillside above the village of Glomset, looking across the Storfjord to the jagged peaks of the Sunnmøre Alps. It is built in traditional Norwegian log construction under sod roofs, which insulate the buildings, store carbon and let them settle quietly into the landscape. Inside, the mood is set by the scent of timber, antique furniture and a carefully chosen art collection, and the whole stay is paced to match.

Thirty rooms and suites are spread across four timber buildings. The fire-lit living rooms are meant to be used like those of a private house, with a library, board games, wooden puzzles, home-baked biscuits and coffee. The kitchen draws on nearby farms and its own garden and greenhouse, and hives on the property supply the honey served at breakfast. The hotel holds Eco-Lighthouse environmental certification, is open all year and is a member of Relais & Châteaux.

Location

The hotel stands on a wooded slope above the small village of Glomset in Skodje, on the shore of the Storfjord in the Sunnmøre region. Ålesund and Ålesund Airport Vigra are about 30 minutes away by car. Transfers can be arranged by car from the airport, Ålesund and elsewhere in the region, by boat from Ålesund, or by helicopter, and guests arriving by yacht can moor at the hotel's own quay.

Spa

The wellness area lies where the hotel meets the forest: a proper Nordic sauna with windows onto the woods, outdoor hot tubs, indoor and outdoor showers and a relaxation lounge. It is open daily, and guests under 15 must be accompanied by an adult. A short treatment menu is best booked in advance — Swedish back-and-neck or full-body massage (including deep-tissue options), foot massage, face and scalp massage and pregnancy massage.

Sports & leisure

Forest trails begin at the door, and the staff share their favourite routes for walking, running and cycling. Everything else is arranged through the activity concierge:

  • fjord kayaking — two-hour guided trips or double kayaks to rent
  • guided hiking, from forest paths to mountain routes in the Sunnmøre Alps
  • private fjord fishing with a skipper, the catch cooked into a three-course dinner
  • private cruises from the hotel pier to the Hjørundfjord, the Geirangerfjord or Ålesund
  • flights in the hotel's own helicopter over fjords, peaks and glaciers
  • day hire of an electric Porsche Taycan for the scenic fjord roads
  • excursions to the Art Nouveau town of Ålesund
  • sommelier-led tastings in the wine cellar
For children

Guided cross-country skiing is pitched at families as well as couples and needs no experience, snowshoes can be borrowed at the hotel, and children under 15 may use the wellness area with an adult.

Restaurants & bars

Cooking across all three dining settings follows the seasons, built on produce from local farms and fishermen, berries from the surrounding forest and herbs from the hotel greenhouse.

  • The Dining Room — the main restaurant, with an open kitchen, an open fire and fjord views; breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, plus Sunday brunch with oysters and a glass of Champagne
  • The Boathouse — a restored boathouse at the water's edge, a few minutes from the hotel; a multi-course tasting menu cooked over open flames and served at a single long table for 12
  • The Lavvo — a traditional lavvo tent in the forest, reached by a short path, where a chef cooks dinner over the fire on set evenings
  • Wine cellar — sommelier-led tastings of four wines
Swimming

There is no pool. Swimming here means a bracing dip in the fjord below the hotel, followed by the sauna and the outdoor hot tubs.

Skiing

The Sunnmøre Alps, where summits rise straight out of the fjords, make superb ski-touring terrain. The hotel arranges ascents with a private mountain guide, as well as summit-to-fjord days on which its own boat drops skiers at slopes reachable only from the water. Forest tracks suit cross-country skiing, with skis to borrow at the hotel and guided outings on offer; on clear evenings there is a chance of the northern lights. Snowshoes are available for walks through the snowy woods.
