About this hotel
General information
Hotel Alexandra stands in the village of Loen at the inner end of the Nordfjord, where the water meets sheer mountain walls and glaciers lie just beyond. Guests have been received here since 1884, when the house had room for just 20, and the same family still runs it, handing it on from one generation to the next. The wine cellar of today's hotel sits on the very spot where the first building stood.
The Alexandra has since grown into a large resort hotel: 206 rooms over eight floors, a 3,700 m² bathing complex, a spa, several restaurants and bars, and conference halls seating up to 600. The valley station of Loen Skylift is right beside it and a marina lies below on the fjord shore. Heating and cooling come from fjord energy and local hydropower, drinking water flows from the mountain behind the hotel, and the property holds Eco-Lighthouse (Miljøfyrtårn) environmental certification.
Location
The hotel is on Lodalsvegen in Loen, in Stryn municipality, on the innermost reach of the Nordfjord. The nearest airports are Hovden and Sandane, about an hour away, and Ålesund Airport Vigra, about 2.5 hours; the hotel's own taxi service handles transfers, and a boat, bus or hotel car can be arranged on request. Geiranger is roughly an hour and a half by road. Parking beside the hotel is free, and the garage has 24 charging points for electric cars.
Spa
Alexandra Spa combines treatment rooms with a separate wellness area for adults over 18: a therapy pool, a cold plunge pool, three types of sauna, three types of sensory shower, and relaxation areas indoors and up on a rooftop terrace with a hot tub. Treatments use Thalgo marine skincare, from classic and anti-ageing facials to long rituals that combine a scrub, a bath and a massage, including one designed for men. Entry to the wellness area is charged separately but included for guests in the Alexandra Suite and the Skåla Suite, and there is a spa shop.
Sports & leisure
Most of the outdoor life here starts at the hotel door, with no car needed:
- Loen Skylift — a five-minute cable-car ride from the fjord to Mt Hoven (1,011 m), where waymarked trails look over the fjord and the Jostedalsbreen glacier
- Via Ferrata Loen — a climbing route high above the fjord, with a suspension bridge, ending on the summit of Mt Hoven; guides and gear from Loen Active
- two ziplines, 125 m and 95 m long, across a ravine on Mt Hoven
- mountain hikes of every grade, including Mt Skåla, over 1,800 m and regarded as Norway's highest peak rising straight from the sea
- Loen Marina below the hotel — kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, pedal boats and wetsuits for hire
- guided kayaking on Lake Lovatnet or the Nordfjord, and hybrid, mountain and electric bikes from Loen Active
- a gym, a spinning room with 17 bikes and a studio for yoga and aerobics
- an activity centre with billiards, snooker, shuffleboard, table tennis, air hockey, table football and darts
- excursions to the Briksdal glacier, up the Lodalen valley with a boat trip on MB Kjendal, and to the Geirangerfjord
For children
The bathing complex has several children's pools indoors and out, with fountains, slides, showers and a cave, plus an indoor waterslide; children under 15 must swim with an adult. Inside the hotel there is a playroom with tunnels and a ball pit, and in the village centre Loen Play offers a funhouse for ages 3–12, a corner for the very youngest and a floor for older children. Many rooms in the Superior, Deluxe, Junior Suite and Suite categories have a sofa that takes one to three extra beds for small children.
Restaurants & bars
The hotel has several restaurants, cafés and bars, and runs one more restaurant at the top of Mt Hoven.
- Restaurant Charlotte — the main restaurant: breakfast buffet, a pre-ordered lunch, and in the evening a dinner buffet or a three-course dinner
- Markus Café & Bar — café and bar on the ground floor by reception: small dishes, cakes and drinks
- Café Zandra — inside the bathing complex, with salads and light meals
- Markus Wine Cellar — a cellar for up to 20 for wine and Champagne tastings and a chef's surprise menu paired by the sommelier, booked in advance
- Bar Ida — a bar with a pianist playing after dinner
- Hoven Restaurant & Bar — at the cliff edge on Mt Hoven, reached by Loen Skylift: local produce, an à la carte and pizza menu, a fireside room and a west-facing terrace
Swimming
Alexandra Bath, a 3,700 m² bathing complex, is open daily to hotel guests and included in the stay. It has a large outdoor pool with massage features, heated all year, an indoor pool with a waterslide, indoor and outdoor jacuzzis and an indoor sunbathing area.
Skiing
The Stryn ski centre, 20 minutes from the hotel, has slopes for alpine skiing, snowboarding and telemark, and 40 km of cross-country tracks run from it, partly floodlit. From the top station of Loen Skylift on Mt Hoven there is ski touring, snowshoeing and sledging, with guides from Loen Active.
