Hotel Continental

About this hotel

General information

Hotel Continental faces the National Theatre across Stortingsgata; its first building and the Theatercaféen café-restaurant date from 1900. It is one of Oslo’s classic grand hotels, owned and run by the same family for generations, and a long-standing member of The Leading Hotels of the World. The hotel grew in three phases over six decades until it filled an entire city block: the original building was joined by a functionalist wing with Art Deco touches, designed by architect Ole Øvergaard and now on the city’s list of protected heritage buildings, and by a later block clad in enamelled steel panels.

There are 151 rooms and suites, each with its own character, hand-picked artworks and an interior that blends classic and contemporary. Art runs through the house: the lobby bar holds one of Norway’s largest private collections of works by Edvard Munch, a set of twelve prints. Five restaurants and bars, led by Theatercaféen, make the hotel a meeting place for Oslo residents as much as for guests, while Continental Event hosts meetings, weddings and private celebrations across two floors.

Location

The hotel sits in the very centre of Oslo, a few minutes’ walk from the Royal Palace and its park, the Storting, the Aker Brygge waterfront and Tjuvholmen. Nationaltheatret station is about 100 m away: three of the six hourly Airport Express trains from Oslo Airport Gardermoen, some 50 km to the north, stop there after about 27 minutes. A taxi from the airport takes around 50 minutes, and the concierge can arrange a private car transfer.

Spa

There is no spa in the hotel; the concierge recommends spas nearby. Guests in the Continental Suite can have massages arranged in the suite on request.

Sports & leisure

The 50 m² Fitness Studio, equipped by Technogym, is open to hotel guests around the clock, and sessions with a personal trainer can be booked through reception a day ahead. The Continental Suite has its own private gym. The central address puts the Aker Brygge waterfront, the Royal Palace and the theatres within walking distance, and the concierge helps with transport and local advice.

For children

The layout works well for families: on two floors a Junior Suite can be combined with a Deluxe and a Standard room sharing a private corridor, and both the Abel Suite and the Continental Suite can be extended with a connecting room.

Restaurants & bars

Five restaurants and bars share the building, from a legendary café-restaurant to a pizzeria.

  • Theatercaféen — Oslo’s classic café-restaurant, a gathering place for artists and actors for more than a century: classic and modern dishes at lunch and dinner, a bar counter and a private room for up to 36
  • Eik Annen Etage — a gastronomic restaurant with a three-, four- or five-course menu and wine pairing each week alongside a few classic dishes, plus a bar and a private dining room for up to 19
  • Bar Boman — the lobby bar, from morning coffee and light lunches to evening cocktails, hung with Edvard Munch prints
  • Casbar — a relaxed pizzeria and cocktail bar in the same building; its pizza is also on the room-service menu
  • Caroline — the breakfast restaurant, with a buffet and à la carte dishes and a view of the lively square by the National Theatre

Room service runs around the clock, with a shorter menu late at night.

Pets

Only assistance and service animals are permitted; the hotel asks to be told before arrival.
