About this hotel
General information
Britannia Hotel has been receiving guests in the centre of Trondheim since 1870 and, for a century and a half, has been the city’s principal meeting place. Its historic 1897 wing, with lofty ceilings and a façade crowned by a dome, is joined by later buildings, while the heart of the house is Palmehaven, a palm-filled hall dating from 1918 that still gathers guests for breakfast, banquets and concerts.
There are 224 rooms and suites, each with a bed by the Swedish maker Hästens and a bathroom in Carrara marble. Six restaurants and bars run from Speilsalen’s tasting menu in a mirrored dining room to a wine bar holding some 10,000 bottles, and Britannia Spa covers 1,400 m² with its own pool. The concierges belong to the international Les Clefs d’Or association, there are rooms for meetings and private celebrations, and a culture calendar of concerts and themed evenings keeps the house lively. Britannia Hotel is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World and Historic Hotels Worldwide.
Location
The hotel sits right in the centre of Trondheim, within walking distance of the city’s main sights, shops and restaurants. Trondheim Airport Værnes is 32 km away; the concierges arrange airport transfers in both directions as well as private chauffeured trips. For guests arriving by car, doormen provide valet parking in the hotel’s own garage.
Spa
Britannia Spa spans 1,400 m², with six treatment rooms, a 12.5-metre heated pool, a mineral pool, a cold plunge pool, a sauna, a steam room and an infrared cabin. The menu covers massages, wraps and scrubs, facials, manicures and pedicures, treatments for men and a dedicated series for children and teenagers. Signatures include a hot stone massage, a facial built around a skin analysis, a salt scrub with an aroma massage and a body wrap with Dead Sea black clay. The spa shop stocks Elemis and Babor, and therapists put together personal home-care programmes. The spa is a quiet zone, with phones on silent and no photography.
Sports & leisure
Britannia Fitness is a 200 m² gym open around the clock, equipped with free weights, functional training kit, treadmills, a SkiErg, rowing and elliptical machines and exercise bikes. A weekly programme of small-group classes is free for hotel guests, and personal training and body composition analysis can be booked. The concierges arrange guided tours, chauffeured outings around Trondheim and the surrounding area, and tailored experiences in food, culture and shopping. Vinbaren hosts wine tastings and seminars, and Palmehaven holds regular concerts and themed evenings.
For children
Families can book the Family Room, two connecting rooms each with its own marble bathroom; Deluxe Rooms take an extra bed for a child, and the Deluxe Suites have a sofa bed. Children under 15 swim in the spa pool during dedicated hours and always with an adult, and the spa menu includes treatments for children and teenagers. Palmehaven serves a children’s afternoon tea for guests up to 12, and Jonathan Grill has a kids’ menu. The gym is open to guests aged 15 and over.
Restaurants & bars
The hotel sees itself as a house of food and drink, with six restaurants and bars under one roof and in-room dining that stretches from breakfast in bed to private banquets.
- Palmehaven — the historic palm hall, serving breakfast built on seasonal local produce with dishes cooked to order, afternoon tea, a Sunday buffet, concerts and private banquets
- Speilsalen — the gastronomic restaurant in a mirrored hall, with a single 12–16-course tasting menu, Grand Symphony, a chef’s table facing the kitchen and a caviar bar
- Brasserie Britannia — a lively brasserie serving French classics with a playful twist
- Jonathan Grill — a lower-level steakhouse where guests grill cuts from the in-house dry-ageing cabinet themselves on Japanese table grills, or leave it to the kitchen
- Britannia Bar — the classic cocktail bar, with signature cocktails drawn from the hotel’s history, a broad spirits list, Champagne and light meals
- Vinbaren — a lower-level wine bar with three tasting rooms and around 10,000 bottles, hundreds of them poured by the glass
Swimming
