Amerikalinjen

About this hotel

General information

Amerikalinjen occupies the former headquarters of the Norwegian America Line on Jernbanetorget, in the centre of Oslo. Designed in a neo-Baroque style by the architects Bjercke and Eliassen, the building opened its doors in 1919 as the shipping line's offices and ticket hall – the place where the Atlantic crossing to New York began for thousands of Norwegians. The main entrance is still framed by an oak door flanked by the sea gods Triton and Nereid, carved in granite.

Today the building is a boutique hotel conceived for the modern explorer. Original ornaments and details from the steamship era sit alongside parquet floors, fan-shaped bathroom mosaics and Norwegian designer lamps, and every room holds objects drawn from the line's history. At its heart is Haven, a green, glass-roofed courtyard, with a brasserie, a cocktail bar and a basement jazz club gathered around it.

Location

The hotel stands at Jernbanetorget 2, a four-minute walk from Oslo Central Station, which the Flytoget airport express reaches from Oslo Airport Gardermoen in 20 minutes. Metro, bus and tram stops and the bus terminal are close by, and the Oslo Opera House, the shops of Kvadraturen and the nightlife of Youngstorget are all near neighbours. Taxis run from the airport, private transfers can be arranged in advance, and guests arriving by car receive a reduced rate at the neighbouring Onepark Oslo S car park.

Spa

There is no spa or swimming pool, but a relaxation area offers rain showers, a Finnish sauna and heated mosaic loungers; it opens for a morning and an evening session each day and needs no booking.

Sports & leisure

The gym is open around the clock, with separate zones for weights, cardio and classes such as yoga or Pilates, and the team can suggest running and cycling routes through the city. In the evenings Gustav hosts live jazz, and the Saturday brunch at Atlas also comes with a jazz soundtrack.

For children

Families can request one of a limited number of connecting rooms in varying category combinations, and an extra bed fits in most Deluxe rooms and suites – both best arranged with reception before arrival.

Restaurants & bars

Food and drink revolve around the green courtyard and the romance of the transatlantic crossing.

  • Atlas Brasserie & Café – all-day brasserie for breakfast (a buffet with an additional à la carte menu), lunch, Saturday brunch and dinner, with a menu inspired by the explorer's curiosity
  • Haven – dining under a glass roof in the planted courtyard at the centre of the hotel, with dishes through the day and cocktails
  • Pier 42 – cocktail bar named after the Manhattan pier where the line's ships docked; its signature menu, The Captain's Diary, is told as a fictional ocean voyage
  • Gustav – intimate basement jazz club with its own entrance, a stage and weekend concerts, serving cocktails and food during performances
  • The Little Bakery – bagels baked in-house, for a tasting with spreads and toppings in Atlas or a bag to take away
  • Floating Bartender – cocktails mixed in the guest's room on request
Pets

Pets are welcome; guests travelling with a dog should let the hotel know in advance.
