About this hotel
General information
The George is an intimate five-star hotel on Park Terrace in central Christchurch, looking straight out over Hagley Park and the Avon River. It takes its name from Sir George Seymour, who sailed on one of the First Four Ships that brought settlers to Canterbury in 1850, and has traded under this name since 1987. The hotel is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, within its Considerate Collection.
There are 53 rooms and suites, plus a separate three-bedroom villa, The Residence. Interiors are quietly contemporary — bespoke furniture, oak-leaf detailing on feature walls, and photography and paintings by New Zealand artists throughout. Service is the point: two Les Clefs d’Or concierges are on the team, reception is staffed around the clock, rooms are turned down each evening and the guest laundry is free to use.
Location
50 Park Terrace, on the edge of Christchurch’s city centre: Hagley Park and the Avon River are across the road, the Botanic Gardens and the cultural precinct are close by, and the business district is about a five-minute walk. Christchurch Airport is roughly 30 minutes by car or taxi; guest parking is free and there are EV chargers, including Tesla units.
Sports & leisure
Guests have access to Thrive Performance and Wellness next door (16 and over), with machines, free weights, Watt bikes, rowers, a sprint track and personal or small-group training; MPower Pilates runs a private reformer studio in the same building. The concierge lends e-bikes and helmets for exploring the city, and books yoga at partner studios and treatments at local spas. Hagley Park’s walking and running loops, 5.8–7.6 km long, start at the front door, and six rooms are available for meetings and events.
For children
Premium Executive rooms take up to three guests, children included. The Residence, with three bedrooms, a kitchen and its own garden, is designed for multigenerational families. The gym is open to guests aged 16 and over.
Restaurants & bars
50 Bistro, on the ground floor facing Hagley Park, runs across three connected spaces — a snug lounge, a sunlit conservatory with outdoor tables and a sleek indoor neo-bistro. The cooking is seasonal and New Zealand in spirit, built on local produce, with a plant-focused menu alongside; the wine list pairs New Zealand and international labels. It serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and a daily high tea, plus early pre-show dinners, the Nifty 50 business lunch and private dining.
