Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam

About this hotel

General information

Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam spreads across six adjoining 17th- and 18th-century palaces on the Herengracht, the grandest of the city’s canals and part of the UNESCO-listed canal ring. Built for Golden Age merchants, the houses keep their façades of rare imported materials, a carved monumental staircase, painted ceilings and marble fireplaces. There are 93 rooms, suites and attic lofts, each looking either onto the canal or onto the courtyard garden.

That garden, with mature trees and immaculate lawns, is one of the largest private gardens in Amsterdam, with a historic tea house at its centre. The buildings later housed a bank, and its old vault is now the Vault Bar cocktail bar. The Peacock Lounge is painted in blues drawn from Vermeer’s palette and keeps an antique armillary sphere once used by sailors to navigate by the stars. The hotel also has a Guerlain Spa with an indoor pool, and rooms for private events and weddings.

Location

The hotel stands at Herengracht 542–556 in the heart of Amsterdam, among museums, theatres and boutiques. The Flower Market is 0.5 km away, Dam Square 1 km, the Rijksmuseum 1.2 km, Artis zoo 1.4 km, the Anne Frank House 1.8 km and the Concertgebouw 1.9 km. Amsterdam Centraal station is 3.1 km away and Schiphol Airport 16 km; the hotel can arrange airport transfers. Covered valet parking with EV charging is available.

Spa

The Guerlain Spa lies beneath the historic canal houses: a heated indoor pool with soft lighting and a small waterfall, a sauna, a steam room, a relaxation lounge and multi-purpose treatment rooms. The menu covers targeted massages, signature and tailored facials, and make-up services ahead of a special occasion.

Sports & leisure

The modern gym has cardio machines and strength equipment, and the spa pool is open throughout the day. The hotel also arranges:

  • a 60-minute Pilates session in one of the historic salons or in the garden, followed by a retreat in the tea house
  • a 45-minute class in making and decorating traditional Dutch stroopwafels
  • tastings of rare spirits in the Vault Bar’s private room
  • a private after-hours visit to the Rijksmuseum with an expert art guide
For children

Families can book connecting rooms, and cots and childcare are available. The stroopwafel class is open to families too: everyone decorates their own wafers and takes home a stroopwafel-maker certificate.

Restaurants & bars

Dining and drinks are gathered around the garden and the historic salons:

  • Goldfinch Brasserie — classic local and international dishes with a modern touch, lunch and dinner overlooking the garden, and occasional themed brunches with live music
  • Peacock Lounge — a gold-and-blue lounge with flowing drapery, hand-blown glass and classic furniture for lunch, dinner, cocktails and the signature afternoon tea
  • Vault Bar — a cocktail bar in the former bank vault, with signature and made-to-order cocktails, fine wines and spirits, and small bites
  • Botanical Afternoon Tea — served with Pol Roger Champagne and TWG teas; afternoon tea is also held in the garden tea house

Breakfast is served à la carte, and there is in-room dining.

Swimming

The heated indoor pool in the Guerlain Spa sits beneath the historic canal houses, with soft lighting and a small waterfall, next to the sauna and steam room.
