Pulitzer Amsterdam

About this hotel

General information

Pulitzer Amsterdam spreads across twenty-five interlinked 17th- and 18th-century houses between the Prinsengracht and the Keizersgracht, at the heart of the UNESCO-listed canal ring. Wealthy merchants and Dutch aristocrats once lived and traded here; the grander façades face the Keizersgracht, the plainer ones the Prinsengracht. Inside, the houses knit together into a maze of staircases and corridors that leads to a large, quiet garden in the middle of the block.

The interiors pair traditional Dutch craftsmanship with modern design and trace four centuries of the buildings’ lives, from the Golden Age to the mid-20th century: exposed beams, plasterwork ceilings on the Keizersgracht side, and a grand wooden staircase and carved fireplace in the Saxenburg house. The lobby is laid with Persian rugs, antiques and a mix of historic and contemporary art, with a library of Pulitzer Prize-winning books alongside. There are 223 rooms and suites; the hotel belongs to Lore Group, and several of its concierges are members of Les Clefs d’Or.

Location

The hotel stands at Prinsengracht 323 in the Nine Streets, with its boutiques and cafés, and runs through the block to the Keizersgracht. The Anne Frank House, Dam Square and the Oude Kerk are within walking distance, and the city centre is about 600 m away. A taxi from Schiphol Airport takes around 25 minutes; from Amsterdam Centraal it is about 10 minutes by taxi, or by tram 13 or 17, which stops a few steps from the hotel. The nearest metro station, Rokin, is roughly a 15-minute walk. The concierge can arrange an airport pick-up by chauffeur-driven car; there is no shuttle. For guests arriving by car, doormen run a 24-hour valet service to the hotel’s small garage, and EV charging points line the canal right outside.

Spa

The Beauty House is the hotel’s own beauty and wellness salon, a short walk away and open daily. Treatments include 111SKIN facials; body massages with a personalised aromatherapy blend and ten minutes of Indian head massage; cuts, colour and blow-dries using Keune, the Amsterdam haircare brand; OPI nail care; and longer experiences that combine massage and facial. Partner brands also include Bloomeffects, whose skincare is built around the tulip.

Sports & leisure

A split-level gym set in the gardens is open around the clock to guests aged 18 and over, with treadmills, free weights and yoga mats. The concierge team plots running and cycling routes, and on request guests can join the hotel manager for a morning run; Pulitzer bikes are available to rent. The real draw is the hotel’s own fleet: the Tourist, a 1909 saloon boat of polished teak, brass, marble, leather and original bevelled glass, and the Belle, an open teak tender for fine weather. Both run 90-minute canal cruises for up to 12 people, private or shared, with champagne, snacks or a picnic on request.

For children

The hotel is fully geared to families, with family and connecting rooms and suites, cots, baby-care products, games and a nanny service. The Very Important Kids programme brings welcome treats, travel diaries, a treasure hunt and a series of Pulitzer bedtime stories; Jansz. and Pulitzer Garden both have a children’s menu, and at Jansz. younger guests get colouring pages, crayons and a treasure box. On the last Sunday of each month Jansz. holds family lunches with a playroom and an arts-and-crafts teacher. Families can also take the private Family Float cruise aboard the Tourist with a children’s discovery map, and The Beauty House offers kids’ hair and nail sessions.

Restaurants & bars

The restaurant and bar sit between the garden and the canals, and room service runs 24 hours a day.

  • Jansz. — modern Dutch cooking from local produce: breakfast (buffet and continental menu), lunch and dinner, with tables in the courtyard garden and on a canal-side terrace
  • Pulitzer Garden — relaxed garden café-restaurant with a terrace: breakfast and coffee in the morning, pasta and wine by day, Mediterranean dishes in the evening
  • Pulitzer’s Bar — Art Deco cocktail bar with a fireplace, deep armchairs and canal views, pouring classic and signature cocktails
  • Copper Rooms, Saxenburg Room, Saxenburg Galleries and Garden Room — private dining spaces, from intimate rooms above Jansz. and a salon with a hand-painted ceiling to the light-filled Garden Room for up to 120 guests
Pets

One small dog (no taller than 55 cm) or cat per room is welcome for a fee; guests are asked to mention the pet in advance so the room can be prepared. Pets are not allowed in Jansz., Pulitzer’s Bar or other public areas, though dogs may join their owners in Pulitzer Garden. The concierge can suggest walking routes, including the Vondelpark, 10–15 minutes away on foot.
