About this hotel
General information
Known simply as the Amstel Hotel to most of the city, InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam is Amsterdam’s grande dame. The palatial building on the Amstel riverbank was designed in 1867 by architect Cornelis Outshoorn, who drew on some of Europe’s most celebrated buildings. Its façade is mirrored in the river, eight lions crown the roofline, and the interiors keep their nineteenth-century ceremony: the famous revolving doors, a grand lobby beneath a white-and-gold ceiling, the historic staircase, chandeliers and lofty ceilings.
It is an intimate house of 79 rooms and suites over four floors, furnished with period pieces and Delft porcelain. Les Clefs d’Or concierges look after guests, historical tours lead through the public rooms, and classic saloon boats wait at the hotel’s own quay for canal trips. Seven event rooms with 522 m² in total host meetings and private celebrations, and the hotel is a registered wedding venue.
Location
The hotel stands on the bank of the Amstel in central Amsterdam, next to the Royal Theatre Carré; the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the boutiques of P.C. Hooftstraat are an easy taxi, tram or bike ride away. Weesperplein metro station is a few metres from the door and two stops from Amsterdam Centraal, about 3 km to the north, while tram 4 from the station stops at nearby Frederiksplein. Schiphol Airport is around 25 minutes by car via the A10 ring road; the concierge arranges private transfers, and guests arriving by water can tie up at the hotel’s own quay.
Spa
The wellness area of the Amstel Health & Fitness Club brings together a sauna, steam cabin, Jacuzzi, plunge pool and a shower circuit with waterfall, rain, hot-and-cold and horizontal showers. Massages and beauty treatments are offered in house.
Sports & leisure
The gym at the Amstel Health & Fitness Club has treadmills, a cross trainer, stepper, exercise bikes, a water rower and free weights, with personal trainers on request. For exploring the city, the hotel keeps classic saloon boats moored right outside and arranges canal cruises with its long-standing boat partners. The concierges handle theatre tickets, and guests can join a tour of the building’s history.
For children
Families can book connecting rooms, and babysitting and nanny services are available on request.
Restaurants & bars
Dining at the hotel is focused on the river, with views across the Amstel.
- The Dining Room — the main restaurant, serving seasonal, ingredient-led cooking backed by one of Amsterdam’s largest wine collections; open for lunch and dinner.
