Hotel Des Indes

About this hotel

General information

Hotel Des Indes is The Hague's grand hotel, set in an 1858 city palace on the lime-lined Lange Voorhout. It opened as a hotel in 1881 and took its name from the hotel of the same name in Batavia, in the former Dutch East Indies; the Batavia coat of arms still sits in the triangular pediment of the facade and on the canopy above the entrance. Over the decades it has hosted galas and banquets, and with the Peace Palace and the government quarter close by it has long been a favoured place for meetings.

The palace origins show from the moment of arrival: a monumental carriage entrance, marble columns, chandeliers, wide ceremonial staircases and a rotunda gallery above the lounge. Interiors are classic with contemporary touches; painters from The Hague decorated the third-floor corridors with tulips, and room numbers appear on blue-and-white vases. There are 92 rooms and suites, 13 of them suites, no two alike, plus a concierge, 24-hour room service and eight daylit rooms for meetings and private events. The hotel is entirely smoke-free.

Location

The hotel stands in the very centre of The Hague on the Lange Voorhout. The Binnenhof and its Hofvijver pond, Noordeinde Palace and the Mauritshuis are a few minutes' walk away, as are antique shops, theatres and parks. Den Haag Centraal station is about 1 km away (trams 15 and 16 stop at Korte Voorhout), and the North Sea beach at Scheveningen roughly 5 km, around 15 minutes by road. Rotterdam The Hague Airport is 20 km away and Schiphol 45 km; the hotel books taxis on request. Valet parking uses the hotel's own car park in front of the building, which also has four electric-car charging points.

Spa

Des Indes Health Club & Spa brings together a sauna, steam bath, relaxation area and a heated pool fitted with two strong counter-current jets. Treatments cover massages, scrubs, facials, manicures and pedicures, waxing and physiotherapy. Hotel guests have 60 minutes of access to the spa and gym on a first-come basis; a slot can be reserved ahead and extended.

Sports & leisure

The gym has up-to-date cardio and strength equipment, and personal trainers build individual programmes and advise on lifestyle and nutrition. The counter-current pool allows a proper workout while swimming in place, or a gentle underwater leg massage. Standard and electric bikes are available to rent, and the concierge plans cycling routes around the city and books museum and theatre tickets.

For children

Families can book the Superior Family Room for up to four guests or one of several rooms with connecting doors. A baby cot is provided free of charge when requested before arrival, and children may use the health club on request.

Restaurants & bars

Dining at Hotel Des Indes takes place in the palace's state rooms, beneath chandeliers and heavy drapery.

  • Restaurant Des Indes — French-inspired cooking built on Dutch produce, à la carte or as a multi-course Chef's Menu with sommelier-chosen wines; also breakfast and weekday lunch
  • Des Indes Lounge — lunch, relaxed dinners and the hotel's celebrated daily high tea in three courses: savoury bites, sandwiches, freshly baked scones with clotted cream and homemade jam, pastries and chocolates
  • Champagne Lounge — an intimate champagne room that keeps the hotel's original cigar vault
  • Private salon beside the restaurant — for dinners in a small circle in a classic setting
Swimming

A heated indoor pool with two counter-current jets is part of Des Indes Health Club & Spa. The nearest beach is Scheveningen on the North Sea, about 5 km from the hotel.
