Château Neercanne

About this hotel

General information

Château Neercanne is the only terraced castle in the Netherlands. It was built in 1698 for the then military governor of Maastricht, together with Baroque gardens that step down the slope above the Jeker Valley. Beneath the estate runs a network of ancient marl caves cut into the limestone; their passages hold the wine cellar, and the caves have long served as a setting for parties and banquets. The estate is known above all as a place to eat, with two restaurants, its own vineyard and a vegetable and herb garden.

The hotel itself is tiny: seven suites set in the historic 17th-century logement. Interiors pair the old fabric of the building with contemporary furnishings — wallpaper echoes the lines of the formal garden in front of the château, and the textiles pick up the colours and patterns of the valley, so no two suites read quite alike. The building has two floors, reception is staffed around the clock and a concierge arranges outings. The château is open all year and is a member of Relais & Châteaux.

Location

The château sits at the southernmost tip of the Netherlands, within the Maastricht city limits and right on the Belgian border, with views across both countries from its terraces. Central Maastricht is about 10 minutes away by car or 40 minutes by public transport, and Maastricht station roughly 15 minutes by car. Several airports lie within an hour’s drive, among them Maastricht Aachen Airport, Brussels Airport and Düsseldorf Airport. The hotel arranges a paid shuttle service and taxis; on-site parking is free, monitored by cameras and equipped with electric-car charging points.

Spa

There is no spa on the estate, but a massage therapist or beauty specialist can be brought to the château on request.

Sports & leisure

There is no gym; instead, the surrounding countryside is laced with walking, running and cycling routes, with maps available at reception. Electric bikes can be hired, and golf and mountain biking are on hand nearby. The Sint-Pietersberg hill and its caves, two local vineyards and Maastricht itself are all within walking distance. The concierge can set up guided city tours of Maastricht and Valkenburg aan de Geul, wine tastings and cooking workshops.

For children

Children of all ages are welcome. Cots and high chairs are available on request, there is a children’s menu, and babysitting can be arranged through a specialist agency. There are no dedicated family rooms or connecting suites: an extra bed (including a smaller one for ages 4–11) fits in the Superior Garden Suite and some other suites, and the Deluxe Garden Suite has a sofa bed for one more guest.

Restaurants & bars

Food is the main reason to come to Château Neercanne; both kitchens draw on vegetables from the estate’s own garden and on produce from local suppliers.

  • Restaurant Château Neercanne — refined, French-inspired cooking that reworks home-grown and local ingredients; lunch and dinner
  • L’Auberge — the relaxed restaurant in the former stables: seasonal French dishes on three- or four-course menus, breakfast and a terrace in fine weather
  • Turret de Gulden — an octagonal turret in the grounds for private dinners of up to eight

There is no dedicated bar: drinks are served in the lobby, in the wine cellar within the marl caves or out in the gardens.

Pets

Dogs on a lead are welcome in both restaurants but not in the suites; assistance dogs may go anywhere on the property.
