Encounter by Ongava

About this hotel

General information

Encounter by Ongava is a nine-tent camp set further into the Ongava reserve than any of its other camps, in a secluded valley below a dolomite hill and wrapped in mopane woodland. The camp is unfenced, so wildlife moves freely between the tents, and a waterhole below the deck is floodlit after dark. Eland, waterbuck, rhino and elephant come to drink there, with the occasional lion; closer by, there is the rustle of mopane leaves and rock hyraxes slipping between the boulders.

Ongava means “rhino” in the Herero language, and the reserve grew out of dry, worn-out farmland restored as a haven for white and black rhino alongside lion, leopard, cheetah, giraffe, gemsbok, springbok and the rare black-faced impala. Stays are fully inclusive: accommodation, all meals, two scheduled activities a day, laundry, airstrip transfers and local drinks, with premium imported brands and champagne charged separately.

Location

The camp lies within the Ongava reserve on the southern boundary of Etosha National Park, its entrance opposite Etosha’s Ombika Gate. Windhoek is about 430 km away by paved road, and Windhoek’s international airport around 470 km. From Ongava’s airstrip the drive to camp takes about 30 minutes (15 km), the longest transfer on the reserve.

Spa

Massages, from soothing to restorative, are given in the privacy of the tent, drawing on old healing traditions and modern techniques and shaped around each guest’s preferences.

Sports & leisure

Activities range across the reserve and into neighbouring Etosha:

  • game drives in the early morning or before dusk, in open 4x4 vehicles carrying no more than six guests, each with an outside seat;
  • night drives with a searchlight, looking for jackal, owls, bushbabies and other creatures of the dark;
  • guided walks with a ranger to approach elephant or rhino on foot;
  • guided excursions into Etosha National Park for lion, elephant, rhino, leopard and zebra, and for flamingos on the Etosha Pan after the summer rains;
  • birdwatching, with more than 300 species recorded on the reserve;
  • a visit to the Discovery Centre, with displays on the region’s geology, wildlife and plants;
  • a boutique of handcrafted pieces by African artisans.
Restaurants & bars

The heart of camp is a stone-and-thatch dining area looking straight onto the waterhole, with a bar and viewing deck alongside and a campfire lit each evening. Wi-Fi is available in the main area.

Swimming

The pool sits close to the waterhole, so animals coming down to drink can be watched from the water.

Rooms

The camp has nine classic safari tents on raised decks: seven individual tents and one pair of tents linked by a curved walkway.

In each room

Every tent has air conditioning above the bed, a mosquito net, a safe, seating inside and out, and its own bathroom with double basins, an indoor shower and an open-air shower.

Standard Tent

A spacious classic walk-in safari tent whose double doors open onto a private covered deck facing the mopane woodland; sleeps two adults and one child.

Paired Tent

Two identical tents, each with its own entrance and bathroom, joined by a curved walkway and a shared private covered deck; sleeps up to four.
