About this hotel
General information
Sanctum Inle Resort stands on the shore of Inle Lake at Maing Thauk, a village that lies partly on land and partly on stilts above the water, with the Shan Hills rising across the lake. The resort is built around arched galleries, inner courtyards and gardens, and its rooms are spread between the main building, a cluster of wings and stand-alone villas in the grounds. Interiors are lofty and bright, with teak floors and ceiling fans.
Accommodation runs from balconied Cloister Deluxe rooms to two-storey Abbey Suites and a 150 m² Family Deluxe with two bedrooms. Around them are an outdoor swimming pool, the Sanctum Spa & Gym with six treatment rooms, a restaurant and a bar with a fireside lounge. Reception is open around the clock, the team speaks English and French, and outings on and around the lake, from sunset boat rides to day trips by car, are arranged at the front desk.
Location
The resort is in Maing Thauk village on Inle Lake, in the Nyaungshwe township of Shan State. The nearest airport is Heho Airport, about 40 km away: the drive to the hotel takes around 90 minutes, while the route by road to Nyaungshwe and on by boat takes about 1 hour 15 minutes. The hotel arranges both road and boat transfers.
Spa
The Sanctum Spa & Gym has six treatment rooms over two floors, all air-conditioned and fan-cooled and most with their own shower; treatments run from 9:00 to 21:00. The menu centres on massage: Aromatic Bliss with a signature oil of the guest’s choice, Swedish, traditional Thai and traditional Myanmar massage (an oil-free technique built on acupressure and stretching), reflexology, hot-stone massage and the Hot Stone Inle Bamboo Massage, which pairs heated basalt stones with bamboo canes. Shorter 30-minute treatments focus on the feet, the back or the head, the last with warm coconut oil.
Sports & leisure
The resort has an outdoor swimming pool, a gym within the Sanctum Spa & Gym and bicycles for hire. The hotel also arranges outings on the lake and beyond:
- an evening ride by private boat to watch the sun set over the lake and the Shan Hills;
- a full-day boat tour through floating villages and gardens, with craft workshops and the local market, which moves from village to village each day;
- a boat trip to Sagar at the southern end of the lake, with its old ruins set among green hills;
- a trip to Indein on the western shore along a narrow, overgrown canal, with stupas on the hill above the village;
- a day trip by car to Pindaya and its caves.
Restaurants & bars
The resort’s restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the bar has a lounge with a fireplace; room service runs 24 hours. Breakfast is included in the room rate, and Abbey Suite guests can have it served on their own terrace.
Swimming
There is no beach; swimming is in the resort’s outdoor pool.
