Selman Marrakech

About this hotel

General information

Selman Marrakech sits at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, well away from the bustle of the medina. It was built in the Arab-Moorish manner by Moroccan craftsmen: a great archway opens onto a ceremonial courtyard, the salons are worked in carved wood, chiselled plaster and zellige tilework, and geometric façades frame Andalusian gardens set with fountains.

The defining theme is the purebred Arabian horse. The hotel keeps its own stud, breeding Arabians of the Selman line that gave the property its name, and the horses can be watched from room terraces and the gardens. There are 60 rooms, suites and villas, an 80-metre pool at the centre of the estate and a Chenot spa, the only one in Morocco.

Location

The hotel lies five kilometres out of Marrakech on the road to Amizmiz, at the foot of the Atlas Mountains and far from the city’s bustle. Villa stays include return transfers from Marrakech Menara Airport and a fast-track arrival service.

Spa

The Chenot Spa covers 1,200 m² and takes its cue from the old heated baths of Istanbul. It has seven treatment rooms, four hydrotherapy rooms, a hydro-massage pool, two heated outdoor pools, two hammams, a gym and a small boutique. Everything follows the Chenot method: a diagnostic assessment that shapes a personal programme, detox retreats of three, five or ten days, nutrition guidance and the brand's own cosmetics. A separate hammam by the Moroccan brand marocMaroc offers rituals with essential oils and is open daily from 9 am to 8 pm.

Sports & leisure

The Selman stables run equestrian sessions for riders of every level: a private 30-minute lesson in the basics of dressage on a highly trained horse, a 40-minute introduction to liberty work, and equine therapy. Guests can also book a signature breakfast or lunch with a presentation of the Arabian horses, or a dinner inside the stables. The spa gym covers fitness.

  • Sidecar tours through the city or out into the desert, for a few hours or a full day, with a driver.
  • Outings in one of more than 30 restored vintage cars: to the Asni valley, to Lake Lalla Takerkoust or on a two-hour drive through the Palmeraie.
  • Hot-air balloon flights over the Atlas Mountains and the city, with breakfast on board.
  • Moroccan cooking classes with a dada or a chef, for groups of up to ten.
  • Six golf courses within a short drive, among them Al Maaden; the concierge arranges city tours.
For children

Selman Kids is reserved for young hotel guests aged 4 to 12 and is open daily from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm. Activities include slides, a trampoline, swings, mini football, table football, creative workshops and outdoor games, tai chi, scooters and pedal go-karts, along with visits to the stables, pony rides and horse-drawn carriage rides.

Restaurants & bars

Two restaurants follow the menus of a celebrated French chef, alongside a Moroccan restaurant and several relaxed spots.

  • SABO — festive French dinners in a Moroccan Belle Époque setting; the name nods to horses’ hooves.
  • La Terrasse — Mediterranean cooking outdoors, for lunch, tea, aperitifs and dinner.
  • Assyl — authentic Moroccan cuisine from family recipes, cooked by an all-female brigade, in an Ottoman-style room with live lute and oud music; dinner daily.
  • Le Pavillon — open-air brunch in the Spring Garden, overlooking the stud’s paddocks.
  • Le Pool Bar — light dishes beside the 80-metre pool.
  • Le Bar Selman — cocktails, wines, spirits and cigars, daily from 6 pm to 1 am.
Swimming

The centrepiece is an 80-metre outdoor pool set in Andalusian gardens, lined with loungers and served by Le Pool Bar. The spa adds a hydro-massage pool and two heated outdoor pools, and every villa has its own 15-metre heated pool in a private garden.
