Riad Fès

About this hotel

General information

Riad Fès occupies a 14th-century palace deep in Fes el-Bali, the old medina of Fes. Once the home of one of the city's most refined families, the house was carefully restored with its Hispano-Moorish architecture intact: carved cedar doors, shimmering zellige, engraved stucco, arcades and marble fountains. The hotel is a member of Relais & Châteaux.

Life here moves between four patios, each with its own mood. The Classic patio is dominated by a vast chiselled-brass chandelier, the Andalusian patio gathers around a pool and fountain under shaded arcades, the Baroque patio feels like a winter garden of ferns and fig trees, and the Contemporary patio completes the set. There is also a garden of palms and orange trees around a Carrara marble fountain, a heated pool, a spa with hammams, the Gayza restaurant and a roof terrace with one of the widest views over the old city. Tea is served in the traditional patio through the day, and a library holds books on Fes and its history.

Location

Inside the UNESCO-listed medina of Fes el-Bali, close to the old city's historic monuments. Fes airport is about 25 minutes away by car, the train and bus stations roughly seven minutes, and Casablanca around three hours by road. The hotel arranges transfers, and a guarded car park is a three-minute walk away.

Spa

The 200 m² spa, finished in stone and wood, works with Cinq Mondes and marocMaroc treatments. It has two hammams, three massage rooms, a treatment room and a relaxation room, with a sauna and a Physiotherm infrared cabin alongside. Rituals include the traditional Moroccan hammam, a Polynesian ritual of hammam, monoi-and-noni scrub and massage, and a full "celestial day" combining hammam, scrub, Ayurvedic massage and a facial massage.

Sports & leisure

The concierge builds tailor-made ways into Fes and its region; on site there is a fitness centre and a sauna.

A restaurant, a lounge bar and a roof terrace; elegant dress is expected in all three.

  • Gayza Restaurant — French haute cuisine alongside Moroccan cooking, with Fassi classics, in a room centred on a fireplace clad in green and gold zellige; lunch and dinner, plus a breakfast buffet of Moroccan pancakes such as melawi and baghrir, smoked Atlas trout and homemade jams and yoghurts
  • Gayza Le Bar — an intimate bar by the garden fountains and orange trees, pouring Moroccan and international wines and signature cocktails, with a light menu of local produce also served by the pool and a tea-time menu from 4 pm
  • The Rooftop — the highest terrace in the medina, looking over the whole old city to the surrounding mountains; tapas from 2 pm to 11 pm with wines and signature cocktails, and Moroccan wine tastings
Swimming

A heated 14 m outdoor pool is open all year, its green living wall mirrored in the water, with a shaded African-style lounge beside it. A second pool, with a fountain, sits at the heart of the Andalusian patio.
