About this hotel
General information
Kasbah Tamadot sits at the head of a valley in the foothills of the High Atlas, close to the Berber village of Asni, with Mount Toubkal on the horizon. Its name means ‘soft breeze’ in Berber. Behind the kasbah walls lie green gardens, tiled courtyards and an infinity pool, and the whole place feels more like a private Moroccan home than a hotel.
There are 37 rooms, suites, tents and riads, no two alike, furnished with traditional Moroccan pieces, antiques, carved wood and handmade textiles. The hotel is open all year. Guests return for cooking rooted in its own organic kitchen garden, the hammam at the Asounfou Spa, floodlit tennis, walking and cycling routes through the mountains, and the Moroccan mint tea ceremony that so often opens a stay here.
Location
The hotel lies near the village of Asni in the foothills of the High Atlas, around an hour’s drive from Marrakech. The road from Marrakech Menara Airport winds through rolling hills and takes 45 minutes to an hour. The hotel arranges road transfers and taxis, as well as a VIP service at the airport that speeds guests through formalities on arrival and departure; hiring a car and driving up is also possible.
Spa
The Asounfou Spa takes its name from the Berber word for relaxation. It has candlelit treatment rooms and a traditional Moroccan hammam, and treatments can also be taken in a room, tent or riad. The hammam rituals are the Traditional Hammam, with black soap, sugar scrub, neroli mask, argan wrap and hair cleanse, the shorter Oriental Hammam and the Ancestral Hammam, which ends with a 30-minute massage. The menu also covers aromatic, deep-tissue, Moroccan and hot stone massages, the Japanese Silk ritual, coffee, spice and rose body treatments, the High Atlas Facial, manicures and pedicures. Gentle, age-appropriate treatments are offered for younger guests.
Sports & leisure
Two floodlit tennis courts lie just beyond the infinity pool, with rackets and balls on request, and a table-tennis table stands in the garden. The gym has a treadmill, an exercise bike, a multi-station weight machine and free weights. Five golf courses with Atlas views are within reach, and reception can arrange clubs, buggies and caddies.
The hotel organises walks in the High Atlas, from gentle strolls around the estate to steep trails up to viewpoints, as well as mountain-bike routes, mule treks, Moroccan cooking classes ending with a three-course lunch, Berber bread-making in the clay oven and open-air film nights. Day trips by car take in the 12th-century Tin Mal mosque, which is open to visitors, the Tizi n’Test pass, the village of Ouirgane, the Ourika Valley with its views of Toubkal and the Lalla Takerkoust reservoir; guests can also visit woodwork and weaving workshops in neighbouring villages.
For children
Kasbah Kids Club welcomes children aged 4 to 12 for Moroccan-style bracelet making, pottery painting, gardening in the organic plots, an introduction to Berber script, treasure hunts and outdoor games. There is no fixed timetable: activities are shaped around each child’s interests. Teenagers can join guided hikes, tennis, cooking and bread-making lessons and trips to Berber villages. Babysitting by an experienced local member of staff can be arranged with advance notice.
Restaurants & bars
The menus pair Moroccan and international cooking, much of it based on produce from the hotel’s organic kitchen garden, and bread is baked in a traditional clay oven. Pre-dinner drinks are served on the roof terrace, on the pool terrace or around the reflecting pool, and there is room service.
- Kanoun — the restaurant at the heart of the kasbah, with mountain views, tagines and other Moroccan dishes alongside international plates, and Moroccan and international wines
- Asayss — restaurant and bar behind the Berber tents beside the garden, with sofas, communal tables, open fires, a pool table and a garden terrace; Moroccan and international cooking
- Roof terrace — dinners under the stars
- Poolside — open-air lunches, including a Berber feast of sharing dishes
- Private dinner in a Berber tent on request
Swimming
The outdoor infinity pool faces the Atlas Mountains, and on cooler days there is a heated indoor pool with its own lounge area. There is also an open-air hot tub; the riads have private heated pools, and some of the tents have their own hot tubs on the terrace.
Pets
Pets are not allowed.
