Amanjena

About this hotel

General information

Amanjena, whose name means “peaceful paradise”, sits in an oasis of palms and olive trees on the outskirts of Marrakech, with the peaks of the High Atlas on the horizon. Its rose-pink walls take their colour from the old medina: shaded courtyards with fountains lead to a long central basin, around which standalone pavilions and villas rise beneath domes and Moorish arches.

There are 40 pavilions and villas, many with heated private pools, set within private gardens with traditional gazebos. Interiors pair zellige floors and Berber carpets with green marble from Ouarzazate. The resort is known for its candle-lit Moroccan restaurant, Aman’s Italian restaurant Arva, a spa built around two hammams, and for being equally well placed for the souks of the medina and for the desert and mountains beyond the city.

Location

Amanjena stands at kilometre 12 of the road to Ouarzazate, on the outskirts of Marrakech and next to the Amelkis golf course; the UNESCO-listed medina and Jemaa el-Fnaa square are a few minutes’ drive away. Marrakech Menara Airport is about 20 minutes by car, and the resort arranges transfers from there and from Casablanca airport, roughly two and a half hours’ drive. Helicopter and private-jet arrivals can also be organised.

Spa

The spa has four treatment rooms and two heated Moroccan-style hammams. Hammam rituals follow local tradition: black eucalyptus beldi soap, exfoliation with a traditional scrub mitt, a full-body mask of rhassoul clay from the Atlas Mountains and a cool eucalyptus shower. The menu also covers massages, facials, scrubs, wraps, manicures and pedicures, including the Aman Advanced Facial with Aman’s Japanese-made Essential Skin line. Half-day programmes combine a hammam, a massage, a facial and lunch in the olive grove; full-day journeys add a therapeutic massage, a movement and bodywork session and an argan-oil hair treatment. Visiting wellness specialists hold sessions throughout the year.

Sports & leisure

The fitness centre is equipped by Technogym, with a mezzanine yoga space warmed by a fireplace, and there is a separate yoga and movement studio; personal training and private yoga can be arranged. On two clay tennis courts, LUX Tennis Academy coaches who have played on the professional tours give private lessons and clinics, and a pétanque court sits among the gardens. The 27-hole Amelkis golf course is next door, with Assoufid close by.

Excursions include the stony Agafay desert, about 40 minutes away, by camel, quad bike or e-bike and with stargazing; trips into the High Atlas by car, helicopter or on foot for a picnic at 1,800 metres; sidecar rides through the medina, Gueliz and the Palmeraie; hot-air balloon flights; and a home-cooked meal with a Berber family in their village.

For children

Amanjena runs an activity programme for children of all ages: carriage rides drawn by the resort’s donkey, calligraphy workshops and tennis or golf lessons. During school holidays a traditional Moroccan tent in the olive grove becomes the daily base for children’s activities, and a separate heated pool is set aside for small children. The team can also plan family excursions on request.

Restaurants & bars

Four venues serve the resort, all open to non-residents as well, and private dinners can be set up almost anywhere on or off the property.

  • The Moroccan Restaurant — candle- and lantern-lit courtyard dinners around a fountain: tagines, couscous, briouats and slow-cooked mechoui lamb, accompanied by Andalusian music
  • Pool Terrace & Olive Grove — Mediterranean lunches under the poolside arches: salads, grills, seafood and pizzas from a wood-fired oven among the olive trees, with Moroccan wines and cocktails
  • Arva — Aman’s signature Italian restaurant, with seasonal dishes for sharing, produce from the resort’s organic garden and tables overlooking the central pool
  • The Bar — a cocktail lounge with fireplaces and seating around the central basin, where a bonfire is lit each evening in the warm months; daily afternoon tea centres on the Moroccan mint-tea ritual

For special evenings, the resort stages candle-lit feasts with live Moroccan music in a decorated caidal tent among the olives, and a Berber dinner under the stars in a private tent in the Agafay desert, reached by camel at sunset.
