About this hotel
General information
Maroma was the first hotel on this stretch of coast, built between the jungle and the white sands of Maroma Beach by a Mexican architect who had fallen for the Riviera Maya. Interior architect Tara Bernerd later reimagined the estate with Mexican-sourced materials and textiles, the work of local artisans and the sacred geometry of the Maya.
Today it has 19 rooms, 50 suites and 3 villas, three outdoor pools, Guerlain’s first spa in Latin America, four restaurants and bars including Woodend by Curtis Stone, a kids’ club and a boutique of Mexican labels. The grounds include a sanctuary for the Melipona bee, sacred to the Maya, and the hotel works with Parley for the Oceans. Nine venues, from jungle to shoreline, host weddings and corporate events for 40 to 250 guests.
Location
The hotel lies at kilometre 51 of the Cancún–Tulum highway on the Riviera Maya in Quintana Roo. Cancún International Airport is about 40 km away, roughly 30 minutes by car; Playa del Carmen is around 20 minutes, Tulum an hour and Chichén Itzá two and a half hours. The concierge arranges private airport transfers.
Spa
Maroma Spa by Guerlain pairs the French house’s treatments with Maya rituals and native ingredients. It has nine treatment rooms, two of them for couples, a beauty salon, a sauna, a hydrotherapy circuit with steam room, a pool, a jacuzzi and a cold plunge. Alongside Guerlain’s signature facials and body treatments are exclusive rituals inspired by cenotes, sound therapy with Maya music and a Melipona honey ritual; there is also an on-site apothecary and a temazcal. The spa is open to non-residents.
Sports & leisure
Three outdoor pools are complemented by a 24-hour fitness centre under a bamboo ceiling with daily classes. The wellness programme includes yoga, sunrise salutations, underwater and sea-wave meditation, a cacao ritual, and healing-remedy and candle-making workshops. The marina offers paddleboarding, Hobie Cats, sailing and windsurfing lessons, snorkelling on the Mesoamerican Reef just 10 minutes offshore and PADI diving. Guests can borrow bikes, join jungle walks and Maya stargazing, and the hotel arranges trips to cenotes, Tulum, Cobá, Chichén Itzá, Valladolid and Ek Balam, sunset cruises, cooking classes and tastings of mezcal and Mexican wine.
For children
The kids’ club occupies La Casita Encantada, an air-conditioned palapa in the jungle, and welcomes children aged 4–12. Six different activities run every day, from leaf art and cooking lessons to ceramic painting and music.
Restaurants & bars
Cooking is built on seasonal produce: almost everything comes from Mexico, and more than half from the Yucatán Peninsula.
- Casa Mayor — traditional Mexican dishes reinvented, from breakfast to dinner; every table faces the Caribbean, and morning tacos and quesadillas are made to order
- Woodend by Curtis Stone — chef Curtis Stone’s beachside restaurant cooking over wood fire: seafood and local meat with Mexican marinades, recognised by the MICHELIN Guide
- Bambuco — a cocktail bar with Mexican interiors and inventive mixology
- Freddy’s Beach Bar — a relaxed beach bar for cocktails and snacks
The hotel also stages dining experiences, beach picnics and tastings of agave spirits and Mexican wines.
Swimming
The hotel sits on Maroma Beach, a broad sweep of powdery white sand and clear turquoise water, with the Mesoamerican Reef just offshore. Each morning the team checks the shore and clears any sargassum, and beach accessories and umbrellas are provided.
Pets
Small dogs and cats are welcome for a per-stay fee. Dogs must be kept on a leash around the grounds; they receive a welcome gift, a bed, bowls and beach amenities, and have their own menu of organic chicken, meatballs, eggs and vegetables.
Rooms
19 rooms, 50 suites and 3 villas follow the sacred geometry of Maya design and showcase Mexican craftsmanship, with terraces facing the gardens or the Caribbean. The Signature collection comprises the Pavo Real Suite and three beachfront villas.
Every room has air conditioning and ceiling fans, a smart TV with Bluetooth sound bar, Wi-Fi, a minibar, a pillow menu, beach accessories and an umbrella, a hair dryer, toiletries, bathrobes and slippers, plus morning coffee delivered to the room and a 24-hour personal host.
