General information
Esperanza sits on the cliffs of Punta Ballena — a headland named for its likeness to a whale’s tail — above the Sea of Cortez. Part of the Auberge Collection, it has two private beaches, a rarity in Los Cabos. The architecture is calm and low-slung: palapa roofs, terraces, palms and desert planting around the pools.
There are 163 places to stay — 53 casitas and suites, plus more than a hundred villas, casonas and haciendas with kitchens and generous terraces — so the resort suits a couple as readily as a large family. Guests have five restaurants, a spa built around a temazcal-inspired water circuit, five pools and clubs for children and teenagers. The resort has no seasonal closures.
Location
The resort lies at kilometre 7 of the Transpeninsular Highway on Punta Ballena, about 14 km from central Cabo San Lucas. San José del Cabo International Airport is roughly 30 minutes by car; private transfers are arranged on request, and a complimentary shuttle runs to the sister resort, Chileno Bay.
Spa
The Spa at Esperanza lies behind wooden gates among native plants, shaded by a palapa roof. Treatments and multi-day journeys draw on the Medicine Wheel, a symbol linking the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. Every treatment begins with Pasaje de Agua, a 30-minute hydrotherapy circuit rooted in the temazcal, Mexico’s traditional steam house; there is also a soaking pool, steam room, couples’ suite, oceanfront massage cabanas and treatments on guests’ own terraces. Visiting Masters in Residence and wellness retreats run through the year.
Sports & leisure
On site are a fitness centre, a movement studio with complimentary classes, sunrise yoga above the sea, tennis and pickleball courts, bocce, a putting green and lawn games. Further afield the resort arranges whale watching in the Sea of Cortez, horseback rides through a desert canyon, off-road outings in the Baja backcountry, cliff hikes at Punta Lobos and trips to the Santiago waterfalls and Todos Santos. The kitchen team runs cooking classes, shoreline sea-foraging walks and tequila and mezcal tastings.
For children
Tortuguitas Kids Club welcomes children aged 5–11 with creative workshops, crafts and nature activities; hourly childcare is available for under-fives, and babysitters can be booked. Teenagers aged 12–17 have their own hideaway, La Cueva, with table tennis, foosball and Xbox, plus basketball, pickleball, bocce and mini-golf. Families also have a playground, family pools and kids’ cooking classes; cribs and rollaway beds for children under 12 are complimentary.
Restaurants & bars
Dining at Esperanza leans on Baja produce and the day’s catch:
- Cocina del Mar — fish and seafood on a rocky promontory ringed by surf
- La Palapa — relaxed Mexican cooking from an open kitchen, ceviches and tacos, with a swim-up bar
- La Terraza Americana — light lunches by the infinity pool: salads, sandwiches, soups and burgers
- Las Estrellas — Mediterranean-leaning dishes with garden herbs and wood-fired pizza, served in the garden with live music
- Alma — coffee and pastries by day, mezcal, tequila and sotol cocktails by night, above the breaking waves
On the beach at Playa Paraíso, two two-storey palapas host private dinners; a private chef can cook in-residence, and room service runs around the clock.
Swimming
The resort has two private sandy beaches and five palm-fringed pools. The adults-only infinity pool connects to the beach and has full-service cabanas and a hot tub. The Palapa Pool, with a swim-up bar and hot tub, is for guests aged 16 and over, while the Terraza Americana Pool, the Margarita Pool with its graduated floor for small children, and the pools around Las Estrellas are for families.
Pets
Up to two dogs under 18 kg are welcome for a fee. They must be kept on a lead and are not allowed in restaurants or pool areas; a bed and bowls are provided on arrival, and a walking service can be arranged.
Rooms
The 163 units range from casitas and suites with terrace hot tubs to villas, casonas and haciendas of two to four bedrooms, with full kitchens and terraces for outdoor dining.
Every unit has a private terrace, Wi-Fi, bottled water and soft drinks, and nightly turndown.
