About this hotel
General information
Casa Malca is a beachfront boutique hotel in Tulum where the line between house and gallery has all but disappeared. Contemporary art is everywhere: paintings, sculpture and design pieces fill the lobby, the suites, the gardens and the pool decks, and large sculptures appear without warning among the palms and the jungle. White walls, tall ceilings, Persian rugs, velvet curtains and vintage finds make it feel like a collector’s private residence rather than a resort.
Accommodation is all suites, from garden hideaways to two-level townhouses. There are three restaurants and a bar, a rooftop spa, three pools – one of them underground – and a beach club on the Caribbean, reached from the main pool through a tunnel woven from branches and leaves. Guests are offered a complimentary guided walk through the collection and gardens. Several settings, from the beach to the rooftop, host weddings and private events.
Location
The hotel sits right on the sand in Tulum’s coastal hotel zone, on the Riviera Maya in Quintana Roo, on the eastern side of the Yucatán Peninsula. The clifftop ruins of Tulum above the Caribbean are close by, and the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve begins further south; the hotel arranges its own trips to both.
Spa
Calma Spa & Gym occupies the rooftop, looking out over the Caribbean and the jungle. Its rituals draw on herbs, oils and flower essences, and the menu runs from Swedish, deep-tissue, hot-stone and aromatherapy massages to facials with Germaine de Capuccini products and Hydrafacial and Glacial Fx treatments, body wraps and treatments for couples. The hydrothermal circuit combines a sauna, steam room, cold plunge pool and hydromassage hot tub, with a relaxation room overlooking the sea to finish. Massages are also given on the beach.
Sports & leisure
The gym looks onto the jungle and is equipped with treadmills, stair climbers, exercise bikes, benches, free weights and a cable machine. On request there is private yoga (Yin, Vinyasa, Hatha, Ashtanga, Kundalini or acroyoga), one-to-one or duet Reformer Pilates and personal training in the gym or on the beach, plus a padel court with lessons from an instructor. A complimentary sunrise meditation takes place each morning on the beach or the rooftop.
On the property the hotel offers a complimentary guided walk through its contemporary art collection and gardens, rooftop stargazing through a telescope with mezcal, tequila or wine, a cacao ceremony, singing-bowl and gong sessions, Janzu and Watsu water sessions in the underground pool (16 and over), ceramics and cyanotype tote-bag workshops, and a mezcal and tequila tasting (18 and over). Further afield it arranges private visits to the Tulum ruins, boat trips through the mangroves of Sian Ka’an to look for manatees and crocodiles, early-morning birdwatching with a stop at the hotel’s traditional fishing lodge, cenote swims, floating along the Maya-built canals of the Muyil lagoon, PADI diving on reefs and in cenotes, snorkelling on the Mesoamerican Reef, windsurfing and kayaking.
Restaurants & bars
The kitchens build on fresh local produce, with service on the beach and around the pools and room service around the clock.
- Philosophy – the main beachfront restaurant, with modern international cooking for breakfast, lunch and dinner beside the sea
- Ambrosia – contemporary Asian cuisine; its sushi is also served by the pools
- Head of a Madman – the beach club restaurant, with a wood-fired oven and grill for pizzas, seafood and steaks
- Haring Bar – a bar of velvet curtains, chandeliers and artworks, pouring mezcal and tequila cocktails with tropical fruit, mezcalitas and margaritas
- Beach Club – cocktails with local flavours served on the sand through the day
Swimming
The beach club spreads along a white-sand stretch of the Caribbean, with daybeds under shaded wooden cabanas, hammocks strung between palms and service from the hotel’s restaurants. A tunnel of interlaced branches and leaves leads from the main pool to the sea. There are three pools: two main pools lined with daybeds and divided by a large sculpture, and the Grotto, an underground pool in a cool cavern with blue and purple lighting and striking acoustics.
Pets
Pets are welcome at the hotel, and dogs are welcome at the beach club too.
