SALT of Palmar

About this hotel

General information

SALT of Palmar is an adults-only boutique hotel on the east coast of Mauritius, made for people who travel for design, food and a real sense of the island. Its 59 rooms sit in buildings whose architecture takes its cue from Moroccan riads. There are no televisions in the rooms by design: a Roberts radio, a shelf of books and a balcony view take their place.

Everything leans local. Produce comes from the island’s farmers and fishermen, meals are cooked to order with no buffets, organic waste is composted and filtered water replaces bottles. The library holds more than 300 books, mostly by Mauritian writers, and every guest receives “This is Mauritius”, a guidebook written by locals, on arrival. Local artists perform in the evenings.

Location

The hotel sits on the coastal road at Palmar, near Belle Mare on the east coast of Mauritius, directly above a white-sand lagoon beach on the Indian Ocean. Mauritius International Airport is about an hour’s drive away, and the hotel arranges transfers.

Spa

SALT Equilibrium has four treatment rooms (one for couples), a universal room, a Himalayan salt room used for breathing sessions, a hydro lounge and a hair salon, along with a small shop for natural skincare. A two-day wellness programme combines salt-room breathing, a foot ritual, workouts and a sunrise beach walk, a healthy-cooking workshop and a kombucha tasting.

Sports & leisure

Days here revolve around movement, the water and local food:

  • a 24-hour gym with cardio and weight machines, personal training and yoga
  • included: kayaks, guided snorkelling, aqua gym, stand-up paddleboarding, pedal boats and glass-bottom boat trips
  • at extra cost: speedboat and tube rides, scuba diving, kitesurfing and catamaran trips
  • on land, bocce and beach football, plus bicycles, sunrise yoga, sunrise horse riding and golf at extra cost
  • food workshops, including kombucha and kefir making, and a lobster dinner by the lagoon
  • a library open around the clock, stocked with books on Mauritian food, music, crafts and nature
Restaurants & bars

The kitchen works with what the island grows and catches, cooking everything from scratch; in-room dining runs around the clock.

  • The Good Kitchen — the open-air main restaurant: seasonal Mauritian cooking à la carte at breakfast, lunch and dinner, with fish, seafood, plant-based and raw dishes
  • Tek Tek — a ten-seat beachside restaurant with an open kitchen: a six- or eight-course tasting menu that reworks the island’s Creole recipes around local fish, seafood and venison; dinner only, in two sittings
  • SALT Bakery — a bakery café with slow-fermented breads and pastries, house-roasted coffee and tropical jams, then afternoon tea with cakes, waffles and pancakes
  • The Rooftop Bar — evening drinks above the lagoon and the ocean: house cocktails, local spirits, wines and light bites
  • The Pool Bar — by the pool: craft beers from island breweries, cocktails built on local ingredients, fresh juices and smoothies
Swimming

A white-sand beach with a calm lagoon runs in front of the hotel, with a beach lawn and a wooden deck set with sunbeds; beach towels are provided. Inside the grounds is a heated pool with a deck facing the ocean.

Rooms

The 59 rooms, in five categories, are each designed for two adults and have a furnished balcony or terrace; most face the ocean. A handful offer twin beds instead of a king.

In each room

Every room has a handmade Carpe Diem bed developed with physiotherapists, Egyptian cotton linen, a rain shower and separate toilet, air conditioning, a safe, tea and coffee, filtered water, homemade snacks, a Roberts radio, a yoga mat, a Dyson hairdryer, a beach bag woven in Mauritius, free high-speed Wi-Fi and a tablet with Netflix on request.
