General information
Kempinski Hotel San Lawrenz is a five-star resort in the countryside of western Gozo, close to Dwejra Bay. Its low buildings of traditional Gozitan limestone are spread across 30,000 m² of semi-tropical gardens with palms, walking paths and pools. There are 142 rooms, suites and residences, and nearly all of them have a balcony looking over the gardens, the pools or open fields.
The draw is Kempinski The Spa, home to an Ayurveda centre the hotel describes as the largest in the Mediterranean, and a hammam built from Turkish marble. Add five pools, six restaurants and bars, three indoor event rooms and gardens for open-air weddings. Kempinski’s Lady in Red service is on hand to help shape days on the island. The resort suits a quiet wellness stay for two just as well as a family holiday.
Location
The hotel sits on the edge of San Lawrenz village, among the fields of western Gozo: Dwejra Bay is 2.6 km away, Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary 2.2 km, Victoria 3.9 km, Xlendi Bay 6.3 km, the Ġgantija Temples 6.9 km and the sandy beach at Ramla Bay 8.9 km. From Malta, Gozo is reached by the car ferry from Ċirkewwa to Mġarr harbour (about 25 minutes) or by the fast ferry from Valletta’s Grand Harbour (about 45 minutes). The hotel arranges private transfers from Malta International Airport, with the driver meeting guests in arrivals and staying with them on the ferry all the way to the door. On-site parking is free around the clock.
Spa
Kempinski The Spa brings three strands together. In the Ayurveda centre an Ayurvedic doctor gives consultations and builds personal programmes, while therapists from India carry out traditional massages, purifying and body rituals, and one-day intensive programmes. The Oriental Hammam, lined in Turkish marble, offers Turkish and Moroccan bath rituals with black-soap cleansing, kessa-mitt exfoliation, foam massage and mud wraps. The thermal area with sauna, steam room, whirlpool and hammam pool, as well as the gym, is for guests aged 16 and over; hotel guests use the spa facilities free of charge, with treatments charged separately.
Sports & leisure
The resort has five pools — three outdoors in the gardens and two heated indoor pools — a gym (16+) and a floodlit tennis court. A free bus leaves the hotel daily at 11:00 for Victoria and Ramla Bay (one way only; reception books a taxi back). The Lady in Red team gives local advice and arranges tours and excursions across Gozo and Malta, and the hotel’s own island guide points to diving and freediving, kayaking, boat trips, hiking, cycling and climbing.
For children
Families have their own outdoor pool with a children’s section, a play area in the gardens, the Family Room with a tent for children inside, and multi-bedroom residences. The Kids’ Club next to the Pool Bar takes children from three years on set days, booked in advance and for a fee, with painting, crafts, board games and puzzles. Babysitting can be arranged with 24 hours’ notice, at a charge. The main outdoor pool, the spa treatment areas, the hammam and the thermal area are adults-only, while children may swim in the main indoor pool during set hours.
Restaurants & bars
Six restaurants and bars share the grounds, and in-room dining runs around the clock.
- L-Istorja — fine dining built on the culinary history of Malta and Gozo, plus premium steaks; dinner on several evenings a week
- Il-Baldakkin — a relaxed gastrobar on the west-facing terrace, made for sunsets: international plates, cocktails, wine, signature coffee and matcha
- L'Ortolan — the daily breakfast buffet, opening onto a terrace overlooking the pools; themed buffets in the warmer months and a Sunday barbecue
- Gazebo — a seasonal open-air restaurant in the gardens by the pool, serving sushi and teppanyaki cooked in front of guests
- Arja — a lobby patisserie with European cakes, coffee, light bites and a signature afternoon tea
- Pool Bar — cocktails, sandwiches, snacks and homemade ice cream and sorbet by the pool
Swimming
The hotel lies inland among fields, so swimming here centres on the pools: an adults-only main outdoor pool, a family pool with a children’s section and two heated indoor pools open all year. For the sea, the daily free bus runs to the sandy beach at Ramla Bay, and the rocky coast of Dwejra Bay is 2.6 km from the hotel.
Pets
Dogs are welcome — up to two per room — only in the Residences area: in the Grand Deluxe Garden View Room and in the one-, two- and three-bedroom residences. A one-off fee applies, proof of vaccination may be requested and dogs may not be left alone in the room. They are allowed on the Il-Baldakkin terrace.
Rooms
142 rooms, suites and residences in a traditional Gozitan style with local limestone; most have a balcony overlooking the pools, the gardens or the countryside. The San Lawrenz Residences, with full kitchens, sit in a quiet separate Residences area.
Rooms have air conditioning, a minibar, a safe, tea and coffee facilities and, in most categories, a bathtub with a separate shower; suites add a pillow menu and a welcome minibar.
