Iniala Valletta

About this hotel

General information

Iniala Valletta is less a single building than a small quarter of the old city: restored Maltese palazzos and townhouses lined along St Barbara Bastion above the Grand Harbour and on the streets just behind it. Harbour House, looking out over the water and its fortifications, is its heart; around it sit the Solis palazzo with its rooftop pool, the limestone townhouses of Vitalis and Hideaway, the Pied-à-Terre residence and La Maison, a townhouse let as a whole.

Each wing was given to a different design studio, so local stone, vaulted ceilings and enclosed Maltese balconies meet sculptural forms, marble and contemporary art. The hotel is known for the cooking at ION Harbour, a spa set in historic stone vaults and service that is attentive without being intrusive; guests travel in electric London-style cabs, and the concierge team opens up Malta through private itineraries. The property holds Green Key certification for sustainable tourism.

Location

The main address is 11 St Barbara Bastion, in historic Valletta, directly above the Grand Harbour; the other wings lie a few minutes' walk away on neighbouring streets of the historic centre. All guest transfers are made in the hotel's own electric London-style cabs.

Spa

Within Spa occupies the hotel's old stone vaults, where soft light, water and limestone set a quiet tone. Facilities include a heated pool, a sauna, relaxation areas and private treatment rooms for one or for two, with massages and face and body rituals tailored to each guest. The spa is part of a wider wellbeing programme that takes in movement, recovery and personal care.

Sports & leisure

The Works gym spans two levels and opens daily from 6:00 to 21:00, with Woodway treadmills, a Peloton bike, a rowing machine, Panatta strength stations, dumbbells up to 50 kg and a Pilates reformer; personal sessions in yoga, meditation and Pilates can be arranged. The guest experience team organises private walks through Valletta, a Grand Harbour cruise on a traditional boat, days at sea on a private yacht, scuba diving, island tours in the hotel's black cab, Maltese cooking classes and local wine tastings, as well as private visits to Casa Rocca Piccola, Palazzo Parisio and behind the scenes at the Manoel Theatre.

For children

Most suites and residences sleep two adults and two children, and La Maison takes up to six adults and two children. Cots are available on request, and in the Lucija and Gallarija residences the second bedroom can be set up with twin beds.

Restaurants & bars

Food is one of the main reasons to stay at Iniala Valletta:

  • ION Harbour — modern tasting menus built on hyper-local, seasonal Maltese produce, in a dining room above the Grand Harbour
  • Anaalā Valletta — Thai cooking on the Solis rooftop, with a sharing menu that each evening explores a different region of Thailand, from the north to the southern coast
  • Solis Club — the rooftop poolside setting at Solis for breakfast, light daytime dishes and drinks, turning into Anaalā Valletta in the evening
  • The Breakfast Club — à la carte breakfasts from seasonal produce, overlooking the harbour
  • Ark Lounge — an intimate lounge for coffee, tea and daily cakes by day, classic cocktails and wine in the evening

In-room dining is also available.

Swimming

The main place to swim is the pool at the very top of the Solis palazzo, where the Solis Club is laid out as a series of open-air areas for swimming, lounging and dining with views over the harbour and the city. Within Spa has a heated pool, and several suites and residences have their own plunge pools on a terrace or in a courtyard.

Pets

Dogs and cats of any breed or size stay free of charge, and dogs are welcomed with a bed and treats. Dogs must not be left alone in the room, cats stay in a crate when in the room, and rooms with pets are serviced only when the owner is present. Pets are kept on a lead in public areas and are not allowed in ION Harbour; a cleaning fee applies if a room is soiled.

Rooms

Rooms, suites and residences are spread across six buildings — Harbour House, Pied-à-Terre, Vitalis, La Maison, Hideaway and Solis — each with its own design, from limestone vaults to sculptural interiors, and many look out over the Grand Harbour.

In each room

Air conditioning and heating, blackout curtains, a 55-inch TV, Wi-Fi, a safe, a minibar, an espresso machine with Difference coffee and JING tea, bathrobes and slippers, Diptyque toiletries and a hairdryer.
