Domus Zamittello

About this hotel

General information

Domus Zamittello is an intimate hotel in a restored palazzo at the top of Republic Street, Valletta’s main thoroughfare. The house was built in the late 16th century, while the new city was still rising; from 1623 it belonged to Italian knights of the Order of St John, and in the early 19th century it took the name Palazzo Zamittello.

Today it is a family-run hotel of 21 rooms and suites spread over four floors. The restoration brought back the building’s original features — an old well was uncovered in the inner courtyard and original vaulted ceilings survive in some rooms — while modern comforts such as underfloor heating sit quietly within the historic interiors. Each room has its own layout and bespoke furniture. Butlers look after guests, alongside turndown, shoe shining, laundry and in-room dining, and a terrace on the third level is reserved for those staying in the house.

Location

The hotel stands at 7 Republic Street, on the pedestrianised stretch in the heart of Valletta, close to the old Royal Opera House, City Gate and Freedom Square. The bus terminus is a short walk away across the bridge at City Gate, and Malta International Airport is about 20 minutes by taxi. The hotel arranges airport transfers in a chauffeur-driven Mercedes V-Class and, on request, an electric-vehicle pick-up right to the door. Drivers are advised to drop off at Castille Square and park at the MCP car park in Floriana, roughly a 10-minute walk.

Spa

AMIS Spa occupies the palazzo’s lower level, beneath its historic arches. Its single, intimate treatment room offers massages, facials and signature sea-water rituals, each tailored to the guest. The spa opens daily, and treatments are best booked in advance through reception.

Sports & leisure

On the same level as the spa, a small gym with cardio and strength equipment is reserved for hotel guests. The hotel also arranges private tours of Malta and Gozo — by chauffeured car (four hours minimum) or on foot with a guide — yacht charters with dining on board, wine tastings at the family-owned Ta’ Betta estate and at the boutique Markus Divinus cellar in Dingli, a hands-on Maltese cookery class that ends with a shared meal, and a visit to a perfume laboratory working with Mediterranean-inspired scents.

For children

The suites suit families well: each has a sofa bed and sleeps up to four, and the hotel recommends the duplex Signature Suite, with its kitchenette, for families and longer stays.

Restaurants & bars

The hotel restaurant sits at reception level, opening onto the inner courtyard, and serves Mediterranean cooking with a considered wine list. Each morning it lays out breakfast — cooked dishes, a continental spread and coffee the hotel takes particular pride in — which can also be served in the room. Up on the third-level terrace, with views of City Gate, the old Royal Opera House and Republic Street, drinks and light snacks are brought at the press of a call bell.

The 21 rooms and suites, in five categories, are spread over four floors of the palazzo, all served by lifts. Every room has an individual layout, and the second-floor suites are duplexes.
