Noonu Atoll

Velaa Private Island

About this hotel

General information

Velaa Private Island has an island of its own in Noonu Atoll, in the north of the Maldives. It is conceived as a private home by the ocean: beach and overwater villas, two-bedroom houses for families and four residences of more than 1,300 m², among the largest in the country. Set apart in the middle of the lagoon, a romantic residence can be reached only by boat. Interiors lean on natural light, sand and sea tones and materials chosen to suit the island.

Every villa has a personal butler. The island adds an overwater spa, a wellbeing village with Ayurvedic and diagnostic programmes, a golf academy with a nine-hole course, a kids' club and an extensive water-sports centre. The resort's marine team runs one of the country's largest coral restoration programmes, and for weddings, milestone birthdays and private celebrations the whole island can be taken exclusively.

Location

The resort lies in Noonu Atoll. From Velana International Airport in Malé the seaplane flight takes 45 minutes, either on Velaa's own nine-seat aircraft as a private charter or on a 15-seat scheduled seaplane; an airport butler meets guests and escorts them to a private lounge. Private jets land at Maafaru International Airport in the same atoll, 7 minutes away by seaplane or 35 minutes by yacht.

Spa

The spa stands on stilts above the lagoon. Its menu runs from massages and healing therapies to personalised facials and Swiss skin treatments, sauna and steam, meditation and yoga, Cloud 9 and Dream Pod sessions and the only snow room in the Maldives, with a beauty, body-care and hair studio alongside. Nearby, Velaa Wellbeing Village and its Eveylaa programme pair Ayurveda with modern diagnostics: physiotherapy and manual therapies, health screening, blood, food-sensitivity and allergy testing, breathwork, sound healing and tailored nutrition.

Sports & leisure

Velaa Dive Center is PADI-affiliated, with morning and afternoon trips to the reefs of Noonu Atoll, private dives from its yachts and boats, courses up to Divemaster and specialities such as wreck, deep and scooter diving. The resident marine biologist leads house-reef and night snorkelling, turtle trips and seasonal manta encounters in Hanifaru Bay, and guests can adopt a coral line of their own.

  • water sports — jet skis and jet-ski tours, flyboard and hoverboard, eFoils, Seabobs, wakesurfing behind a dedicated boat, waterskiing, wakeboarding, catamaran sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing with lessons; complimentary windsurfing for licensed riders, stand-up paddleboards, glass-bottom kayaks and pedal boats
  • yacht, speedboat and traditional dhoni outings: big-game and sunset fishing, dolphin cruises, lunches and picnics on uninhabited islands
  • a golf academy with a nine-hole par-3 course, one-to-one PGA coaching and a TrackMan simulator
  • a fully covered tennis court, two padel courts, squash, table tennis, badminton, beach volleyball and beach tennis, a football pitch, a climbing wall, pétanque and croquet
  • a Technogym gym, personal training, boxing, Pilates, spinning, TRX, aqua training, HIIT, beach yoga and InBody composition analysis
For children

Lha Velaa Kids Club is certified by Worldwide Kids and the Luxury Childcare Association. It offers water and outdoor play, an energy studio with active games, sensory sessions with sound and light, cooking classes and science experiments, indoor climbing and play spaces, and quiet reading corners, along with island quests, craft workshops and talent shows. Children aged 8–10 can try diving through the Bubblemaker programme, in the pool and on a shallow reef.

Restaurants & bars

Seven venues cover everything from a piano-accompanied dinner to a cocktail with sand underfoot.

  • Aragu — the island's signature evening restaurant, blending East and West, with a serious wine list and live piano
  • Tavaru — teppanyaki at the top of a tower above the palms; the tower also holds the Maldives' largest private wine cellar, open for tastings
  • Faiy — light, seasonal cooking in a tropical garden, the dining heart of the wellbeing village
  • Athiri — the all-day restaurant, where chefs from 14 countries cook international dishes with local ingredients
  • Cru — a Champagne bar facing the sea, pouring rare cuvées and vintages
  • AVI — a poolside lounge for creative cocktails and live music at dusk
  • Beach Bar — drinks and light bites by the water

The resort also arranges private dinners, family beach picnics and full-scale galas.

Swimming

The island is ringed by white-sand beaches and a turquoise lagoon with a house reef where guided snorkelling takes place. Steps lead from the overwater terraces straight into the lagoon, beach villas and residences open directly onto the sand, and every villa, house and residence has its own pool.
