Six Senses Laamu

About this hotel

General information

Six Senses Laamu occupies Olhuveli, an island in the far south of the Maldives, and is the only resort in Laamu Atoll. Palm groves, white sand and a turquoise lagoon set the tone: its 94 villas are scattered through the greenery along the shore and strung out over the water on timber jetties, built from local, sustainable materials with calm, natural and generously proportioned interiors.

Much of island life happens over the water, where one of the largest overwater complexes in the country gathers restaurants, a wine cellar, a bar, the dive centre, an ice-cream parlour and a boutique. The resort is best known for its marine work: the Maldives Underwater Initiative, run here with three conservation partners, combines marine research, guest education and community outreach. Dolphins live around the island, and Yin Yang, one of the Maldives’ best-known surf breaks, lies a short boat ride away.

Location

Olhuveli lies in Laamu Atoll in the southern Maldives. The resort’s own direct seaplane covers the distance from Velana International Airport in Malé in 65 minutes; seaplanes fly in daylight only, so arriving in the Maldives by 3 pm is advised. When flight times do not fit, a domestic flight and speedboat transfer can be arranged on request.

Spa

Six Senses Spa has nine private treatment “nests”, some right on the beach and others tucked into the tropical planting. The menu covers Ayurveda with dosha consultations, Maldivian massages, facials, meditation and yoga in an open-air rooftop pavilion. There is a steam room, a nail bar, a relaxation and biohacking area, a juice bar and a non-invasive wellness screening that experts use to build a personal programme, with visiting practitioners joining through the year. The spa is open daily from 9 am to 9 pm.

Sports & leisure

A coral house reef rings the island, and the resident marine biologist leads complimentary guided snorkels. Deep Blue Divers trains and certifies divers, while the Ocean Wings centre offers kayaks, catamarans, windsurfing and stand-up paddleboarding. From May to September Tropicsurf runs daily trips to the Yin Yang break and teaches beginners.

  • sunset cruises on a traditional dhoni in search of dolphins
  • turtle snorkelling safaris and turtle-hatching watches
  • castaway days on an uninhabited island, plus dawn, sunset and big-game fishing
  • outings on the resort’s own yacht, Sense of Escape
  • sustainability tours and visits to the SHELL marine conservation centre
  • a waterfront gym with Technogym equipment, group yoga, an open-air jungle cinema and a library
For children

The Den, a complimentary club for children aged 3–11, also arranges babysitting at an extra charge. Young ocean lovers can join the Junior Marine Biologist programme run by the Maldives Underwater Initiative team, mixing guided snorkels with classroom sessions and a certificate at the end of each course; the SHELL centre has its own kids’ zone.

Restaurants & bars

Most venues sit over the water, and much of the produce comes from the resort’s own organic garden.

  • Longitude — open-air restaurant: breakfast buffet, à la carte dishes and a live cooking station, themed dinners leaning towards South Asian cooking
  • Leaf — Mediterranean cooking built on the garden and neighbouring islands’ harvest, adults only (12+)
  • Zen — Japanese cuisine with a daily-changing set menu and a chef’s-choice dinner
  • Kaji — teppanyaki, with seafood and prime cuts seared on the hot plate in front of guests
  • Sip Sip — relaxed sunken pool bar serving homemade pizza, grills, burgers and pasta
  • Chill Bar — multi-level overwater bar a few metres from the reef, with signature cocktails
  • Altitude — spun-glass wine tower above the ocean holding more than 300 labels, with five-course wine-paired dinners
  • Ice & Chocolate Studio — complimentary parlour for homemade ice creams and sorbets, with chocolate made in-house

Beach dinners with a personal chef, including a weekly lobster barbecue, and in-villa dining complete the picture.

Swimming

A large free-form pool sits a few steps from the beach on the ocean side of the island. White-sand beaches fringe the island, the beach villas have their own access to the sea, and the house reef begins right beside Chill Bar.
