About this hotel
General information
Six Senses Kanuhura spreads across Kanuhura island in Lhaviyani Atoll and two uninhabited islets nearby. Its defining feature is the beach, one of the largest in the Maldives: a long run of white sand under palms, backed by a lagoon with its own house reef. The 85 villas line the shore or stand on stilts over the water, with one to three bedrooms, so the resort works equally well for couples, families and groups of friends.
The mood is easy-going, and sustainability is woven into island life. A marine biology team monitors turtles, coral and seagrass across the atoll, guests and staff turn glass, paper and food scraps into something useful at the Earth Lab workshop, and tours take in the resort's own water bottling plant, organic garden and orchid nursery. The island has four restaurants and two bars, a Six Senses spa, a dive centre and a children's club.
Location
Kanuhura lies in Lhaviyani Atoll, a 40-minute seaplane flight from Velana International Airport in Malé; on request the resort can also arrange a 30-minute domestic flight to Lhaviyani followed by a 15-minute speedboat ride. The islet of Jehunuhura, home to Drift, is seven minutes away by boat, and uninhabited Masleggihuraa ten.
Spa
Six Senses Spa Kanuhura has eight treatment rooms, including a couple's suite and a VIP suite, separate male and female heat and water areas with hot and cold pools, a nail bar and a wellness consultation room. The Biohacking Recovery Lounge uses compression therapy and vibration pain relief to ease jet lag, while the Alchemy Bar teaches guests to blend their own natural products. Treatments draw on local ingredients — coconut, mango, papaya, honey, lemon basil and mint — and the sound of the oceanic drum and Koshi chimes; a coconut, honey and papaya body cocoon is a signature. Yoga, sleep, detox and fitness programmes, biomarker screening, a yoga studio, a beachfront yoga pavilion and a gym complete the offer.
Sports & leisure
The Deep Blue Divers centre runs PADI courses from a first try-dive to advanced level and nitrox training, plus daily dives in Lhaviyani Atoll — among them grey reef sharks in the Kuredu Express channel. Snorkellers can explore the house reef, the Turtle Airport resting spot 15 minutes away by boat and a nurse shark site, and when a nest is due to hatch the resident turtle biologist calls guests to watch. The watersports centre lends kayaks, paddleboards, windsurf boards and catamarans free of charge and offers windsurfing, kitesurfing, wing-surfing, wakeboarding and water-skiing lessons, e-foils, Seabobs and parasailing. On land there are two tennis courts and an air-conditioned squash court with a resident coach, volleyball, football, badminton, table tennis and bicycles; fishing, cooking classes, open-air cinema, sunset dolphin cruises and a castaway picnic on Masleggihuraa round out the programme.
For children
The complimentary Grow With Six Senses kids' club runs games, treasure hunts and snorkelling, while teenagers have their own Island Hideout with a family games room. Children from eight can try diving through the PADI Bubblemaker and Seal Team programmes, and from ten take junior courses. Babysitting is available on request.
Restaurants & bars
Menus lean on the resort's organic garden, local fishermen and farmers from the wider region.
- The Market — breakfast with feet in the sand; dinners with South-East Asian, Italian, Indian and Japanese dishes and themed buffets
- Bottega — Italian, with a wood-fired oven for sourdough pizza, homemade pasta and Italian aperitivi
- Drift — lunch on the beach of Jehunuhura islet, seven minutes by boat
- Sip & Sand — poolside: charcoal-grilled meat and catch of the day at lunch, sushi, sashimi and gyoza in the evening
- The Point — Spanish tapas to share and a wine bar on the island's northern tip
- Sunset Point — rooftop bar with a pool, light bites, cocktails and a resident DJ at sunset
- Scoops — Six Senses ice cream and fresh juices
Private dinners can be set up on the beach, and Mediterranean, Asian and Maldivian dishes are served in the villas.
Swimming
Kanuhura's beach is one of the largest in the Maldives, with a house reef in the lagoon just offshore. There is a 472 m² free-form pool and a 393 m² infinity pool at The Point, and almost every villa has a pool of its own. For more seclusion, boats run guests out to the islets of Jehunuhura and Masleggihuraa.
