About this hotel
General information
Milaidhoo Maldives occupies the tiny island of Milaidhoo in Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The island measures only 300 by 180 metres: a ring of white sand, dense tropical planting and a protected house reef all round. There are just 50 villas and residences, each with its own pool, and children are welcome from the age of eight, so the resort is shaped above all for couples and for travellers in search of quiet.
Architecture and interiors reinterpret Maldivian heritage in a contemporary way: thatched roofs, furniture made especially for the island, local art and natural textures. The mood is relaxed, with no dress code, a round-the-clock island host service and a doctor and nurse on call day and night; drones are banned to keep the peace. Two things stand out: a restaurant set on a traditional ba’theli cargo boat in the middle of the lagoon, and the short hop to Hanifaru Bay and its seasonal gatherings of manta rays.
Location
Milaidhoo lies in Baa Atoll, about 126 km north-west of Malé. The seaplane from Velana International Airport takes 35 minutes; a resort representative meets guests at the airport and takes them to a private lounge. Seaplanes fly only in daylight, so for arrivals in Malé after 15:30 the transfer is a 15-minute domestic flight to Dharavandhoo followed by 15 minutes by speedboat. A private seaplane charter can be arranged. Hanifaru Bay is 15 minutes away by boat.
Spa
Serenity Spa stands over the lagoon, with four overwater treatment suites and a yoga pavilion facing the ocean. Its approach is holistic, pairing old healing traditions with present-day techniques; facials and body treatments use Natura Bissé, Aromatherapy Associates and, for men, Obsidian Skincare, alongside rituals drawn from local remedies. A separate salon handles manicures and pedicures.
Sports & leisure
The dive centre holds PADI Five Star status: house-reef and boat dives, private and night dives, including fluorescent night dives, manta encounters, nitrox and certification courses. The house reef has its own underwater caves, Milaidhoo Caves, and guided night snorkelling is on offer.
- Hanifaru Bay: from May to November it hosts one of the world’s largest gatherings of manta rays, sometimes with whale sharks; the resort runs three group trips a week (weather permitting) and can arrange a private outing for two with a marine biologist
- the Ocean Stories aquatic centre, with a resident marine biologist: kayaks, windsurfers, catamarans and stand-up paddleboards, with snorkelling gear provided free for the whole stay
- boat trips: lunch on a deserted sandbank, sunset dolphin cruises, sailing under the stars and evening outings on a traditional Maldivian dhoni
- fishing: catch-and-release big-game trips on the open ocean for wahoo, sailfish, swordfish, giant trevally and marlin, or traditional Maldivian hand-line fishing
- a 24-hour gym, a games room, a library and a boutique; live music at Compass Pool Bar in the evenings and a coral restoration project guests can join
For children
There is no kids’ club, but the Junior Islanders programme arranges activities tailored to each young guest.
Restaurants & bars
The island has several restaurants and bars, from dinner aboard a historic boat to a barefoot lunch on the sand; breakfast is included, with half board or the Milaidhoo Gourmet Plan as alternatives.
- Ba’theli — a restaurant on a traditional cargo boat moored in the lagoon, drawing on the ancient Spice Route to reinterpret Maldivian seafood, served on the open deck or in a dining room with a glass floor over the marine life below; Ba’theli Lounge opens at sunset
- Ocean Restaurant — the main restaurant on a deck by the ocean, with breakfast from a buffet and à la carte, and an international menu at dinner
- The Shoreline Grill — fresh seafood and prime meats from the grill, served by the show kitchens or in a private beach pavilion
- Shoreline Grill Chef’s Table — a teppanyaki-style counter where the chefs cook dinner in front of the guests
- Shoreline Grill Wine Room — a cool, intimate room for private tastings led by the sommelier
- Compass Pool Bar — beside the pool, looking out to sea: fresh juices, cocktails, wood-fired pizza, bento boxes and salads, turning into a laid-back lounge after dark
- Azure — a beach-shack lunch spot on the sand among screw pines
Meals can also be set up anywhere on the island — on the beach, on a villa deck, aboard a traditional boat or on a nearby sandbank — and in-villa dining runs around the clock.
