Meeru Maldives Resort Island

About this hotel

General information

Meeru Maldives Resort Island is the only resort on Meerufenfushi, an island in North Malé Atoll that is generous by Maldivian standards: about 1.2 km long and 350 m wide, roughly 32 hectares of coconut palms, tropical gardens and white sand, with some 1.5 km of beach along its shores. Much of the island has been left close to its natural state, and a walk all the way round along its green paths takes about 45 minutes.

The resort has 282 rooms and villas in nine categories, from garden rooms in the island's interior to villas over the lagoon and beach villas with their own pools. It is built for families and couples alike: families have a children's playroom, a playground and a paddling pool, while guests aged 18 and over have their own villas, buffet restaurant, bars and pool. Vegetables and herbs for the kitchens come from the island's own garden, and the island's museum tells the story of the Maldives and displays the skeleton of a blue whale. Stays are on full board or on the All Inclusive Plus plan with unlimited drinks.

Location

Meerufenfushi lies at the far eastern edge of North Malé Atoll, about 48 km from Velana International Airport in Malé. The transfer takes around an hour by speedboat; boats run to a schedule timed to guests' flights, and a yacht transfer can be arranged on request. A Crown & Champa Resorts representative meets guests at the airport.

Spa

Duniye Spa has two settings: one in a tropical garden in the heart of the island, the other over the turquoise lagoon. The menu covers Balinese, Thai and aromatherapy massage, the signature Ocean Dreaming massage with warm herbal poultices, the Maldivian Serenity ritual built on organic coconut oil from the Maldives, lymphatic drainage, reiki, reflexology, pregnancy massage, a sound bath with singing bowls and facials using Healing Earth organic products. There are treatments for couples as well as manicures, pedicures, hairstyling and make-up. Group yoga classes with breathwork, asanas and yoga nidra are held at the spa on a regular schedule.

Sports & leisure

There is plenty to do both in the water and on land.

  • Diving with Euro-Divers: a PADI 5 Star dive centre with PADI courses and guided dives; complimentary group try dives, snorkelling lessons and windsurfing taster sessions are scheduled regularly
  • Water sports: catamaran sailing, kayaks, windsurfing, stand-up paddleboards, jet ski trips, towed inflatables and beginner lessons in flyboarding, water skiing and wakeboarding
  • Snorkelling: a complimentary daily boat trip to the house reef (equipment not included), sunrise and adventure snorkels and turtle trips; in the lagoon the resort is restoring live coral, guests can swim over this coral garden, and staff run guided sessions about the reef
  • Excursions: sunset cruises, day sailing, a sandbank castaway trip and morning, afternoon and deep-sea fishing
  • On land: a gym, tennis, padel and pickleball courts, a golf driving range, a putting green, a 9-hole pitch and putt course, beach volleyball, badminton, pétanque, a football pitch and bicycles, plus weekly sports tournaments
  • Evenings: boduberu, the traditional Maldivian drumming and dance, talks on the country's culture and history, DJ nights, karaoke, live music and cinema under the stars on the beach
  • Two games rooms with billiards and chess, the Maldives museum, a nature trail and garden walks, a library, the Meeru Moments photo studio and a clinic with a resident doctor
For children

Komas Kids Playroom, next to the museum, is a room full of toys and games for children aged 3 to 12. Beside the Dhoni Bar pool there is a separate children's pool and a playground. Teenagers have their own programme of sport, creative sessions and discovery. A babysitter can be booked through reception with 24 hours' notice, at a charge.

Restaurants & bars

The island has two buffet restaurants, four à la carte restaurants, a café and six bars.

  • Farivalhu — the buffet restaurant for guests at the southern end of the island, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner under a thatched roof on a sand floor, with a theme each night and Maldivian cooking on Fridays
  • Maalan — an adults-only buffet restaurant for guests at the northern end
  • Asian Wok — Asian cooking in an over-water pavilion, with teppanyaki cooked at the grill in front of guests and a hot pot table for eight
  • The Reef — a beach grill for lobster, yellowfin tuna, soups, grilled meat and a seafood tower for two
  • Vilu — Mediterranean cooking from Portugal, Spain, Greece and France, dinner only
  • A-Mare — Italian cooking with brick-oven pizzas, pasta and risotto, served al fresco
  • Meeru Café — fresh juices and smoothies, snacks, ice cream, coffee and tea by the Dhoni Bar pool
  • Bars: Dhoni Bar by the pool, Pavilion Bar on the beach, Kakuni Bar with sports on screen, billiards and table tennis, Asian Wok Bar for sunset drinks, and the adults-only Uthuru Bar and Vilu Bar
  • Candlelit dinners on the beach, dinners at tables sunk into the sand, and in-villa dining
Swimming

The island is ringed by some 1.5 km of white sand beach and a warm lagoon. Two freshwater pools sit on the beach: the Dhoni Bar pool, open to all guests, with a children's paddling pool beside it, and the Vilu infinity pool for adults only. Loungers and beach towels are complimentary. The resort map marks the snorkelling spots as well as stretches where swimming is not allowed because of currents.
