About this hotel
General information
JW Marriott Maldives Kaafu Atoll Island Resort occupies Hathaa Finolhu, an island in Kaafu Atoll just 15 minutes by speedboat from Velana International Airport in Malé. Its 80 villas, some over the lagoon and some on the beach, each have a private pool and direct access to the sea. The architecture draws on traditional Maldivian gedhoru houses, with thatched kajan roofs, turquoise doors and the colours and patterns of local lacquerware, while the arrival jetty takes its shape from a grey heron in flight.
Every villa is looked after by a Safeeru, a personal butler named after the trusted envoys who once hosted honoured visitors in the Maldives. The island grows its own vegetables, fruit and herbs in the JW Garden, which supply the restaurants, and offshore a 30-metre underwater structure, designed with MIT’s Self-Assembly Lab, softens the waves, protects the beach from erosion and is slowly turning into a new reef. The resort is Green Globe certified.
Location
Hathaa Finolhu lies in Kaafu Atoll, about 11 km from Velana International Airport in Malé. The speedboat crossing takes around 15 minutes; the resort runs shared transfers, with private boats on request, and does not allow third-party transfers.
Spa
Spa by JW stands over the water, with six treatment rooms, a steam room, sauna, whirlpool, a relaxation pavilion and dedicated spaces for yoga and fitness. Massages, including couples’ treatments, and facials are built around German skincare brand BABOR, and the scent of jasmine runs through the space. Between the spa’s arrival area and the treatment rooms, Elysian Shores is a quiet corner of hammocks and deep seating facing the ocean. The spa is open daily from 10 am to 8 pm, by appointment.
Sports & leisure
Every villa opens directly onto the sea, so snorkelling starts at the door, and guests can swim out to the underwater structure as it develops into a coral nursery and a new reef.
- a water sports and dive centre: scuba diving, snorkelling and jet skis
- a 24-hour gym overlooking the lagoon, with cardio and strength equipment, locker rooms and fitness classes, at no charge
- yoga in a dedicated space at the spa
- quiet spots around the island: Jungle Whisper, tucked into the greenery near Veyo, and Twilight Haven, with hammocks and a traditional Maldivian joli-undholi swing for watching the sunset
- walks through the JW Garden, where produce for the kitchens is grown
- a boutique with resort wear, books, handmade jewellery and Maldivian crafts
For children
The Family by JW kids’ club is open daily from 9 am to 9 pm at no charge. At its heart is a whimsical treehouse where children climb walls, swing from the ceiling, build with blocks and make arts and crafts; next door, the Splash Park offers colourful water play, and there is a separate children’s pool. The island’s mascot is Marlo the parrotfish, a reef dweller that grinds coral into the fine white sand of the beaches. Babysitting is also available.
Restaurants & bars
Seven restaurants and bars share the island, their menus built around herbs, vegetables and fruit from the resort’s own garden; at sunset, spinner dolphins can sometimes be spotted offshore.
- Veyo — beachfront restaurant with an international menu and ocean views, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner
- Riva — Mediterranean dinners of seafood and coastal spices, inspired by the Amalfi Coast, the Greek islands and the Spanish Riviera
- Athiri — South American parrilla grill house with aged prime cuts cooked over charcoal and fresh seafood, facing the ocean; the name means “shoreline” in Dhivehi
- Nikkei — overwater bar with cocktails and light bites that blend Japanese and Peruvian cooking
- Wahoo — bar beside the main pool, serving cocktails, premium spirits and light bites
- Pure — seasonal restaurant opposite the JW Garden, cooking just-picked produce in the spirit of island cuisine, with a chef’s table
- a deli and patisserie — chocolates, macarons, truffles, cakes, pastries and freshly brewed coffee
Sandbank lunches, candlelit dinners under the stars and private beach dinners can be arranged, and in-villa dining runs around the clock. The standard rate includes a buffet breakfast at Veyo, and full board is also available.
Swimming
White sand beaches ring the island, and every villa opens straight onto the sand or into the lagoon. The main infinity pool sits between the ocean and the beach, next to Wahoo bar, with a lap pool and a children’s pool alongside; it is open from 10 am to 6 pm, with towels provided. Each villa also has its own private pool.
Pets
Pets are not allowed.
