About this hotel
General information
InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort occupies Maamunagau, an island on the edge of Raa Atoll, close to the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll. White beaches and palms ring the island, a broad lagoon surrounds it, and its 81 villas — on the beach, over the lagoon and over the water — are done in a contemporary Maldivian style, each with its own pool.
Manta rays define the place: the Maamunagau lagoon is a feeding and nursery ground for juvenile mantas, and Manta Trust researchers based on the island give talks and take guests out on the water. Every guest receives Club InterContinental benefits — breakfast, afternoon tea, an evening aperitif, non-motorised water sports, bicycles and a private seaplane lounge — and a personal Island Curator looks after each stay. Over the lagoon, The Retreat is a quiet, adults-only hideaway.
Location
Maamunagau sits on the outer edge of Raa Atoll, next to Baa Atoll. The seaplane flight from Velana International Airport in Malé takes 35 minutes; the resort’s airport team meets guests and escorts them to its private lounge at the seaplane terminal.
Spa
AVI Spa — the name means “sunshine” in Dhivehi — stands over the water, with six overwater treatment villas designed around natural light and the sound of the ocean. Treatments use Biologique Recherche, The Organic Pharmacy and VitaJuwel crystals, with dedicated hand and foot care from a London brand, and visiting wellness practitioners come to the island through the year. Yoga takes place in an ocean-facing pavilion and at other spots around the island, in groups or privately, alongside aerial yoga in silk hammocks, aqua yoga and floating sound therapy.
Sports & leisure
The lagoon around the island holds several snorkelling spots with blacktip reef sharks, dolphins and turtles, and the house reef starts a few steps from the beach. From December to April reef mantas feed in the Maamunagau lagoon, and the Manta Trust team guides guests and explains its research. The water sports centre is open 9 am–6 pm, and all non-motorised activities are complimentary.
- included: kayaks, pedal boats, stand-up paddleboarding, windsurfing, catamaran sailing and snorkelling gear
- at extra cost: parasailing, jet blade, jet skis, wakeboarding and water-skiing
- diving for beginners and experienced divers, with trips to the surrounding reefs
- Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll, where large manta gatherings and whale sharks appear from June to November
- snorkelling with nurse sharks, dolphin cruises on a dhoni (traditional Maldivian boat), sandbank escapes and private yacht outings
- turtle nest protection on the island and a coral restoration programme in which guests can sponsor a coral rope
- an ocean-view gym with personal training and classes (TRX, circuit, aerobic), a complimentary padel court, island bicycles, and Maldivian craft workshops such as coconut carving and weaving
For children
Planet Trekkers takes children aged 4–12 for games, arts and crafts and mini expeditions that introduce island and ocean life. Themed on the Maldivian dhoni, the club has an arts studio, a play zone, a toddler corner, a library and an area for Maldivian culture and music, plus a splash pool, a large garden and a pirate-ship climbing frame outside. Teenagers have their own Teen Escapades programme: cooking classes, mocktail making, catamaran and diving certification, kickboxing, local crafts and boduberu drumming, manta talks, fishing trips, beach barbecues and beach film nights. Babysitting is available at extra cost, and the restaurants offer children’s menus.
Restaurants & bars
Dining on the island spans Mediterranean, Asian and Japanese kitchens, while breakfast, afternoon tea and the evening aperitif come with Club InterContinental benefits.
- The Lighthouse — Mediterranean cooking built on seasonal produce and seafood; evenings begin with a 360-degree view from the top of the lighthouse, followed by dinner on the terrace or by candlelight on the beach
- Fish Market — Maldivian catch with South-East Asian flavours; guests choose their own seafood and the chefs cook it in front of them
- Café Umi — all-day dining by the beach, with breakfasts that include Asian dishes, cooked-to-order plates and pastries, plus light lunches and dinners
- Teppanyaki Experience — a six-course Japanese dinner cooked on a hot iron griddle at the table
- The Collective — a space by the main pool with beach views, serving afternoon tea and an aperitif hour, with a pizzeria and the island boutique
- The Retreat — an overwater, adults-only (18+) hideaway with a pool, light bites, tea and evening drinks
- Pool Bar — a swim-up bar with cocktails and alcohol-free drinks
- Sunset Bar — a dhoni-shaped bar for sundown champagne cocktails and canapés
- Wine Cellar — a selection of wines from around the world
Private dinners with a personal chef can be set up on a secluded beach, a sandbank or in the villa, and The Collective’s kitchen hosts cooking classes.
Swimming
White-sand beaches ring the island, and the lagoon with its house reef surrounds it on every side. The main pool, with a swim-up bar, lies at the heart of the resort beside the beach; a second pool at The Retreat, over the lagoon, is for adults only. Every villa has its own pool, and beach towels are provided in the villas, on the Café Umi beach and at The Retreat.

The resort has 81 villas on the beach, over the lagoon and over the water, including six residences with two or three bedrooms, a kitchen and generous living space. Every villa has a private pool, and interiors pair contemporary comfort with Maldivian touches.
